Leaving Yellowstone, headed for the Grand Tetons, we crossed the Continental Divide, also known as the Great Divide.

As you learned in geography class (assuming you were awake), “Divide,” in this case refers to ground-water drainage. The Divide separates the watersheds of the Pacific Ocean from those of the Atlantic Ocean. Everything east of the Divide drains eastward; everything west of it flows westward.

As we learned in a video shown at the park’s visitors center, the Tetons got their name from French-Canadian trappers who thought the mountains resembled breasts. Thus; ‘Trois Tetons” (three breasts).
