at first, he’d been so sure that she was just messing with him and he couldn’t help but laugh along to what she was saying. “i’m sorry, what?” he paused for a moment, a look of disbelief coating his features. “are you actually hitting on me? if so, i feel like a dick because i’ve just been laughing this entire time and i don’t want you to think i’m making fun of you or something but i mean, really? you’re...definitely out of my league. ask any person in here and they’d tell you that.”

There was something serene in being in school in the early hours, putting the last finishing touches before the madness which was the first day of term. Haley basked in the warm glow of sun leaking through the blinds as she drummed her nails against the top of the copier. Class schedules, lesson plans, attendance records- the soft ‘whuuur’ of the machine surrounded the empty office, mixing with the gentle hums of a song she had long ago written but never done anything with. 

Within the tranquility there was a lingering sense of sadness within her. The office, the school, it was memories of a better time. It was almost cathartic being in the one place where so much of her life had revolved. So lost in her reverie and nostalgia, she hadn’t even heard the person approaching and entering the room, lost in a memory long ago until footsteps broke through and she turned to look at the stranger with an emotion which only screamed intrigue. She hadn’t expected anyone else to be here so early, unless it was custodial.

“Can I help you?” she asked, slightly wary.

And promptly, she stepped out with her coat in one hand while chucking her phone in her pocket before bounding down the stairs and out into the relatively cold night. The brunette was at Rousseau’s 3 minutes later than she had promised and on not finding Nate’s familiar head anywhere, she pulled out her phone to text again.
