“i think you are,” she tells him, small smile on her face as she rests her hand on his forearm across the case. “you’re good, maybe not all the time, but you’re good to me, you’re good to the kids, you’re better than you realize.” she gives his arm a gentle squeeze. she turns to grab the rag so she can finish cleaning the case for the night. “what brought all this on?” 

Lacey sighed when she pulled all the pieces out of the box only to realize she doesn’t have the right kind of screwdriver to put together her table. And here she was starting to think she was handling this whole on her own for the first time pretty well. Still, she wasn’t going to let this get her down. It was just that it was a Sunday past 6 so everything was definitely closed. She pulled herself up off the floor and dusted off her pants before grabbing her keys and making her way over to her neighbor’s house. She’d met the kids a few times, but she’d never met their dad, but now was as good a time as anyway, right? She took a deep breath and knocked on the door, waiting for someone to answer. 

Lacey had only just managed to calm herself down and she knew she wouldn’t be able to keep it together for long. She wished she hadn’t taken the train to the appointment. She pulled out her phone and called Shane, barely biting back the sniffles. “Please pick up, please, please pick up,” she whispered into her phone as the line rang.
