Now that classes had started again, Evelyn could already tell that she was going to have to get used to late nights. There were only so many hours in the day for homework and being at the shop as much as she could. At least she was used to running on little sleep, and she could often study during slow periods. She was doing just that today, so absorbed in the book before her that she didn’t even hear the bell chime over the door. Or realize anyone else was there until a pair of large hands slid around her waist. “Oh!” She jumped, looking over her shoulder and smiling at who it was. “Jody! How are you?” Evelyn smiled, turning in the man’s arms for a hug. “This is a lovely surprise.”

“Tell me about it,” Jody whispered into her ear, his arms wrapping around her for a hug. His voice was a bit deeper than normal, something about the tone. And the faint smoke from his hand, the occasional darker billowing out from his shirt cuffs. And then there was his eyes and face, his eyes completely black, his face more gaunt like in appearance, paler than normal.

“How cute you are when surprised.”

Dhani had left the fantastic little party grotto Layla had found early the night before, partly over the argument with Layla and Professor Rosier, but mostly because he had drank too much that night and didn’t wish to escalate anything out of the blue because he thought of some new point. Which he was far more prone to do when drunk. Not to mention bad memories of his own childhood, ones he told himself he was long over, ones that faded in comparison to the following year. Being bullied at age seven meant nothing when you were eight and your mother was dying. Even less when you were ten and your best friend was in danger of it as well.

But thinking of all that, Dhani had more or less discounted, or at least devalued, Layla’s point of view. Raziel had his reasons for hating angels and while Dhani fully disagreed with such a brush off, he couldn’t see Layla’s experience as quiet the same thing. Especially when he didn’t know enough about vessel witches. He had always felt conflicted when around Layla. He loved her as a friend, fascinated with her journey now, eager to help her discover new things, especially music. But he had gotten to know Winter in a way few people did, though he questioned her kindness towards him constantly. She had manipulated him and used him, publicly, to show off her power. But he had seen her vulnerable and kind with him as well. How much effort would it have taken for her to just... be nicer in life? It was something Dhani wouldn’t get to know, but with the visit home with Warren, it was bringing up similar questions. Ones Dhani wouldn’t get to explore with Warren, now that he was unclaimed. Questions that Dhani believed were their own answer for why Dhani was unclaimed.

Winter was gone and Layla had struggled and survived to be here. Dhani had made a promise to himself not to take his friends for granted, and so he sought Layla out, hoping to talk with her and learn more.

It was raining a bit, drizzling really, but Dhani didn’t mind. It was still warm and he particularly loved rain in warmer weather. He walked to Jace’s home, knowing Layla hadn’t any classes at the time, but hoping she would be there.

Five months. Mayabelle had been gone for five whole months. She’d left when she received word from her mother that her father’s condition had taken a turn for the worse. Lung cancer. His health had been declining for years now and May knew it was only a matter of time before she was going to have to say goodbye. So she had packed her things, taken Maverick with her and gone to be with him.

Now, she was back again. And as she set foot on the island for the third time, she couldn’t help but feel a little bit more at home. Even as her title of Mistress was stripped away, and the thick, leather collar was slapped on her pale neck once more. As disturbing as it might be, May was more comfortable as a slave. She knew her place and was good at following the rules, decent(ish) at avoiding the sadistic Masters and Mistresses  - and if she was being honest with herself, she had made a shitty Mistress.

The tiny blonde took in a slow, deep breath; then she grabbed her bag and began to make her way towards the Grant Student ‘Dorms.’

Seeing her again was more than just a little bittersweet. He hadn’t been entirely blindsided, being the guidance counselor, her file had slipped across his desk. He read and reread it a few times, hoping her status change was a mistake. He even checked with the headmaster. But her file wouldn’t give him the entire story and he was anxious to see her again.

He waited outside in the student quad the morning the boat arrived, a cup of tea in his hand, another next to him for May. Mouse sat in his lap for emotional support. He ditched his paper cup in the recycle bin, picking up hers. Mouse jumped off his lap, ready to go seeing an old face as well he was excited to see again. The leash tugged at Jody’s wrist, Mouse trying to get to May as quickly as he could. Jody picked up the to-go tea, made how he remembered she liked it, walking over to her. Mouse got to her first, jumping up on her leg in his excitement.

“Looks like someone remembers you.”

Jody rang the doorbell of Quinten’s home. He heaved a sigh, took a deep breath and hoped Dhani wasn’t at work. He needed someone to talk to. Or maybe just invite over for a Lord of the Rings marathon. A particularly terrible nightmare, followed by distractions all day on the first day back to school... he kept loosing files, distracted and scatterbrained, wondering if he’d over stayed his welcome here after all. If he was up for the job at all.

Maybe he looked it, tired or down beat, because Quinten opening the door and promptly hugging him wasn’t what Jody expected. After a moment, Jody returned it.

“Hi, Quinten... Thanks.”

Bella sighed as she stared at the letter in her hands for a very long time. She knew. Pamela knew where she was now. Her hands shook as she held tightly onto the paper, she couldn’t help but have her eyes filled with unshed tears as she closed her fists around the letter. She wanted to rip it to shreds, to set fire on it and simply forget she ever got a letter from her deranged mother, but a part of herself still wanted to open, wanted to know what her mother wanted to say, wanted to forgive.

Bella was quick to wipe her eyes as she heard someone approach and her eyes met the person’s ones. “Hi….” She said tiredly, as if her own internal monologue had tired the wereleopard out. “The…. mail is here, I… guess that’s why you’re here…” She said as she moved away from where the letters were, sighing as her eyes fell upon the letter she held once more, taking a deep breath as she still tried to decide what she would do.

Jody gave a concerned smile to the woman on the verge of crying. Of course, he’d come down for the mail, but his could wait. Suzanne, his mother, wrote every once and a while, Leyna, his foster mother would rather phone, and Abe, his foster father was a bit of both, but would write more frequently than either woman. His foster sisters preferred email, Judy in particular was aggravated as all hell she couldn’t just text him anymore. But rules were rules.

“I was.” Jody said, the emphasis on the past tense of his actions. She hadn’t even opened the letter yet and she was near tears.

“I’m Jody. Is there... Can I help somehow?”

Jody looked up from his phone, hearing a new voice, a voice that sounded rather lost and worried and... well, new. Mouse seemed very curious as well, abandoning his sunny sleep spot in front of Jody’s feet to try and walk over to the girl. But his leash held him back. Jody got up from the bench and the little blonde chihuahua strode ahead, sniffing and sniffing the air until he could sniff the new girl.

“Oh, let’s see...” Jody spoke before coming near, not wanting to frighten her. “Should be on that third paper?” Jody spoke kindly, pointing to the packet but not standing too close. He gave a simple wave of merely holding up his hand.

“Hi. I’m Jody, this is Mouse,” Jody pointed down to the chihuahua, who sat down, looking up at the girl expectantly. Jody gave her a small instinctive wink, “He wants you to pet him. If that’s okay with you.”

“I used to do this with my foster mom. We still do, when I visit home...” Jody smiled, kneading the bread on his kitchen counter, his usual leather bracelets off and set aside making his wrist oddly bare.

“It’s a pretty calming experience. And you get tasty bread out of it in the end.”
