I’m broken, and you’ll never know

I’ve never been the one to give up

But love, as we know it,

It protects and it vitiates,

It heals and it burns.

It builds you up, then tears you down.

Your words, they cut into my soul like a knife.

Making me feel so small, insignificant.

All that we shared, all the warmth and loving and caring,

It all comes to this –

To wearing a million masks,

Feigning myriad emotions,

Slipping in and out of all these roles,

Yet, never truly knowing each other.

Pretending to be happy,

Pretending to be content,

While my soul weeps in silence,

Mourning the futility of our love.

Somehow I was never good enough,

Perhaps I never will be.

But my tears won’t give me away,

I’m broken, and you’ll never know.

And so I hide this secret

Of how every fiber of my being

Has learned to deplore the very thought of love

The very thought of trust,

Which is but a farce.

This secret is all I have.

I seek comfort  in knowing there’s something you can’t take away from me.

And now I revel in your heaven of lies

With a little lie of my own.

Not half as dark,  but it’s real, and it’s mine

So I’m broken, and you’ll never know.
