I think a lot about how in Seven Sermons to the Dead, the connection between opposites is described as intimate. Two opposing forces are bound to one another simply by nature of directly contrasting and contradicting one another.
The phrase ‘opposites attract’ does exist, but I never really resonated with the phrase until I read the Sermons. Even now, ‘opposites attract’ feels reductive, they do the opposite of attract. They strain against the ties they have to one another, desperate to break free from their binds. But, there is something really fascinating and beautiful about how everything is so connected and intertwined. Even opposing forces are made to acknowledge one another.
