This impressive, vigorous work is part of Jack Heath’s long fascination with thorn forms. This involvement very likely began in pre-WWII Britain, and it continued until his death in 1969.
The painting is a precise double square, and Heath’s deep knowledge of the classical geometric division of the picture surface is evident behind the powerful rhythms and glowing colour.
Also, the painting clearly makes reference to stained-glass, as in ‘Strange City’
