This is my Fence Secret Santa gift for @nothingtoknow222! She requested a humor piece involving the Halverton or Exton teams. Click read more to view the whole fic.
Itās not often that the Halverton Menās Fencing Team has time to relax and hang out. However, now that the season is over, with school now verging on the cusp of a month-long winter break, they now have time to frolic and bond to their heartās content. Though this sudden bonding session was probably aided by the fact that it was a mandatory event hosted by Captain Scott Langtree himself.
āAlright, boys, where to first?ā Scott asked. The quartet was walking the streets of Bridgeport, awaiting their next adventure.
āYou made us come out here without a plan?ā Sungchul said, rubbing his mittened hands over his puffer jacket. The Connecticut wind was harsh and biting, despite the sunny atmosphere. The moment this trip started, all the members complained about the frigid weather, and Scott had to try not to roll his eyes.
āDuh,ā Scott said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. āThis is supposed to be a celebration for a hard-fought season! I want you all to celebrate however you'd like! We probably wonāt get this chance again, with the four of us.ā
Unspoken words hung fraught from Scottās declaration, but no one dared speak them aloud. Now that the fencing season was over, their graduating seniors were leaving for good, after a season lost not only to Exton, but to an unseen up-and-comer, Kingās Row. Though they fought hard to the bitter end, theyād been unsuccessful in their goal to beat their rival, Exton, and had lost to a crummy school in the process. And while Scott had been planning to continue fencing in college, he would no longer be a part of the Halverton team. Additionally, Sangchul would not be returning to the team next year because he completed his goal of one year of fencing to train for the pentathlon.
After a brief pause, Sangchul broke the silence. āI want to go horseback riding.ā
The three boys turned to him in disbelief.
āThere is no way in hell Iām going horseback riding!ā Gian exclaimed, adjusting his hat. At the same time, Van shook his head, long hair fluttering in the wind. āNo, grazie,ā Van said.
āWe are not going horseback riding,ā Scott said. Sungchul murmured something unintelligible but clearly ticked off.
āIt has to be something realistic. I wanted to binge all three Lord Rings movies and their adjacent spin-offs, but I know thatās not going to happen. It has to be something close and doable within the next few hours. Weād have to go to a country club for horseback riding.ā
Sungchul sighed. āYeah, I guess.ā
āHow about we go to a barber shop? Iāve been needing a trim, anyway,ā suggested Van. Scott shook his head.
āThis is a group celebration, not a time for you to run and do your errands. Plus, my barber is in Barbados right now. I donāt trust anyone else.ā
Van sneered, verging on disgusted. He ran his fingers through Scottās hair. āI donāt trust him. You should talk to my barber instead.ā
The group continued to stroll the Bridgeport sidewalks, arguing over where to spend their time. After half an hour, their legs were cramping and their voices hoarse from arguing. They stopped at a bench to rest, located in front of a luxury strip mall, home to all kinds of interesting stores.
āMaybe we should just go home,ā Sungchul suggested. āNone of us can make a decision. And itās too cold.ā
āYeah, dude. Weāre in Connecticut, of course, itās going to be cold,ā Gian said.
Sungchul sighed and rolled his eyes. āYou know what I mean.ā
Another bickering session broke out among the four boys. Their stomachs started growling amongst the chaos.
āLetās get something to eat. Iām starving,ā Gian said. They all noticed a delicious smell wafting through the air. The scent of fresh bread, rich hot chocolate, and sugar cookies was too tantalizing to ignore.
They followed their noses to a nearby cafe. The bell above the door rang as they pushed open the entrance and gawked at the wonderland before them.
The inside cafe was cozy; fairy lights were hung up along the rafters, gingham fabric covered every table, and a few bookshelves were packed to the brim with mystery novels. Friends and families milled about the building, each dining on delectable treats.
āWhoa,ā Gian said. āThis place is awesome!ā They quickly filed into line, gawking at the deserts in the glass display.
After they ordered, they took their seats at a booth in a corner, ready to chomp down on their sweets.
Gian let out a dreamy sigh as he bit into his Chocolate Explosion cupcake. He washed down a particularly rich bite with a glass of chocolate milk. āThis is the life. I hate that the season is over, but itās nice to eat something without having to worry about my calorie intake for the day.ā
Scott nodded, taking a generous bite out of a cinnamon bun. āFor sure. See? Wasnāt this a nice celebration to end the season?ā
The rest of the team agreed. Van, who had a mouth full of an Oatmeal Raisin cookie, swallowed. āI was skeptical of this place at first, but I agree. Who knew something so cheap would be so good?ā
Sungchul, who opted for a slice of strawberry cheesecake, took another bite. He looked at his cheesecake sadly as he swallowed. Though the fencing season was over, he still had to train for the pentathlons he planned to participate in just a few months from now. This was his last cheat day for a while. āItās a little too good. I could eat the whole cheesecake.ā
The four boys chatted excitedly, eating their pastries. They were about to leave the Cafe when the bell above the door rang, announcing another group of customers. They didnāt pay attention to the group at first, until a sharp gasp rang across the room.
They turned to see what the issue was, only to find Extonās fencing team standing at the front of the store, faces aghast.
The teams stand in shocked silence, eyeing each other up and down. They finally snapped out of their stupor when someone spoke up.
āWhat on earth are you doing here?ā Van and Gian snarl simultaneously. Scott rushes to their sides before they can do anything stupid, like start a fight. Typical unruly underclassman.
āWhat are we doing here?! What are you doing here?!ā Aster Leventis says. Glad to see that unruly underclassmen were truly at every school.
Jesse Coste steps up to bat. āWeāre having a team outing to celebrate the end of the season.ā
āSame here,ā Scott replies coolly. āWe can coexist for a little bit, canāt we? After all, the season is over, and neither of us won State. Why are we fighting?ā
The other boys looked around, pondering Scottās words.
āI mean,ā said Thomas, āheās got a point. I just want to hang out with my friends.ā He sent a side glance to his twin. āā¦And Aster, I guess.ā
Marcel sighed. āYeah. Iāve been looking forward to grabbing some cookies from this place for the past month.ā
Jesse Coste spoke up. āI have a deal. Iāll buy both of our teams as many cookies as they could ever want, and we have a truce. Deal?ā
Halvertonās team huddled around their table. After a few minutes of frantic whispering and nodding, they finally came to a consensus.
āDeal,ā Scott said, reaching over to shake Jesseās hand. āWe have a truce.ā
Jesse smiled. āGreat. After you.ā
āHmmm. Iāve had better,ā Thomas said, chewing his cookie thoughtfully.
āWhat?ā Van exclaimed. āThese cookies are delicious! They remind me of the cookies Iāve had back home in Italy.ā
āNo, I agree with Thomas,ā Aster said. He didnāt look too impressed with his dessert. āThese are pretty bland.ā
āWhat, like you could do better?ā Gian said, rolling his eyes. He was 3 cookies deep in the giant pile Jesse had bought. Clearly, he did not have the same reservations as the Exton team.
āI think we could do better,ā Marcel said. He had hardly touched his cookie.
Scott sighed. āWe just agreed on a truce, guys.ā
Jesse smirked. āNo, no. This is good. What use is it pretending there arenāt unresolved feelings between our teams? We both lost to Kingās Row; maybe a little competition between just us could even the score, and prove, truly, who the superior team is.ā
āWell, in that case, what did you have in mind? None of the local pistes are open right now, and I donāt think either of our schools will let visitors from opposing teams in right now, either.ā
Jesseās condescending smirk said it all. Whatever this āfriendly competitionā was, he thought they could win it.
āWell, we want to see who can make the best cookies, right? How about a little baking competition at my place? My house is big enough to fit all of us. Plus, we have enough ovens for both teams to use.ā
āIām game. What about you guys?ā
The boys from both teams nodded, each smiling mischievously. This was going to be fun.
***
Jesse was right; his house was large enough to host both teams and then some. The kitchen, in particular, was about twice the size of the dorm rooms at Halverton. It would suit their purposes nicely.
āAlright, boys,ā Jesse said, clapping his hands together. āThese are the rules. Each team has one hour to bake the best cookies they can. When the hour is up, we will have a panel of judges choose their favorites. The winner will be declared the superior team. Ingredients have been laid out on the kitchen island. Are we ready?ā
āUh, no?ā Van said. āFirst off, can we follow a recipe? What are the guidelines for whatās considered a good cookie? Who is on this so-called panel of judges? Arenāt the only people here your parents?ā
Jesse sighed, rubbing his temple. āNo, no recipes. The guidelines are taste and decoration. And no, the judges' panel isnāt my parents. Itāsāā
āWhoa, whatās going on here?ā A new voice called out from the foyer. It sounded vaguely familiar. From around the corner came three figures.
āWait, theyāre going to be the judges?!ā Gian exclaimed. āThatās not any better than your parents!ā
āRelax,ā Jesse said, gesturing towards none other than Nicholas Cox, Seiji Katayama, and Bobby Rodriguez. āThese are the most unbiased judges I could think of on such short notice.ā
āWhat, your ex-boyfriend, your brother, and some other guy? Thatās still not fair,ā Sungchul said.
āYouāre missing the point. Yes, itās my ex and my brother and their friend, but trust me, that doesnāt earn me any other brownie points. If anything, it puts Exton at a disadvantage.ā
āJesse is correct. I do not judge based on personal relationships,ā Seiji said coldly. āWhichever team has the best dessert shall be declared the winner.ā
Nicholas slung an arm around Seiji and Bobby. āYeah, I donāt care who wins. Bobby, Seiji, and I were in the middle of having a sleepover. I wonāt lose any sleep over this. Plus, free cookies!ā
Bobby spoke up. āHow about this? We do what they do on the Great British Bake Off! You guys will know what team made what, but weāll judge it blindly to be fair!ā
Both team captains glanced at each other, nodding.
āThat⦠could work,ā Scott said.
Jesse nodded. āAlright. Then itās settled.ā He turned to the ājudges,ā an order ready on his tongue.
āOne of you set a timer. Everyone in their places? En garde, prĆŖts, allez!ā
***
Maybe this was a mistake.
Currently, the Halverton team is making chocolate strawberry oatmeal raisin cinnamon cookies in the shapes of various fencing poses and phrases. Only, none of them knew how to make cookies from scratch, and their artistic abilities were very lacking.
āI thought you knew how to bake things, Van!ā Exclaimed Gian. Van, who was currently covered head to toe in flour, gave an affronted groan.
āI do! When I have a recipe in front of me!ā
āUgh, move aside!ā Gian pushed his teammate away from the mixing bowl. āOkay, what do we need? We already have flour and butter. How about some sugar?ā
Halvertonās largest teammate grabbed a bag of white powder and the closest available measuring cup. He filled the cup to the brim and dumped it unceremoniously into the bowl. Next, he reached across the counter to the carton of eggs, cracking three open into the mixing bowl.
āDude, you got some eggshell in there! Gross!ā
āWait, where?! I didnāt get any egg shell in there!ā
"Uh, yeah, you did! Look at all those jagged white pieces!
āCrap! Sorry, guys.ā
Sungchul sighed. āWhatever. We just have to move on. Weāre running out of time.ā He took the list of their combined flavors and pulled out each corresponding ingredient. However, he didnāt bother measuring out each ingredient; instead, choosing to pile them directly into the bowl.
āOoh, wait, can we add some peanut butter?ā Van asked. āI think itād really make the flavors pop.ā
Sungchul shrugged, already twisting the lid for the aforementioned peanut butter. The spread landed in a large glob in the center of the mixture.
āOkay, I think weāre supposed to mix it now. Do the Costes have a mixer?ā
Scott looked around their side of the kitchen, ignoring the way Exton floundered around just a few feet away. Jesse looked far too busy to ask. Luckily, lo and behold, a mint green KitchenAid lay tucked away in a corner just a few feet away.
āAha! Here we go!ā
Scott plugged in the appliance, transferring their mixture into the larger bowl. He switched on the mixer, only to have the substance explode, covering each of the boys in a white powder.
The group could only stand there in stunned silence for a few seconds before realizing they needed to lock in. They may be covered in pre-mix cookie dough, but they still have a competition to win.
āOkay, letās try that again.ā
This time, Scott experimented with a low speed setting. Slowly but surely, the cookie dough began to form.
After the cookies were cut into shapes, Scott and Sungchul placed them onto a baking tray and slid them into one of the many ovens at the Coste residence. Ā All that was left to do was to let them bake and decorate.
***
āOh⦠they look so⦠unique!ā
Well, at least Bobby was trying to be nice. Neither teamās cookies had come out quite as nice as expected. Though the Halverton team noted that theirs looked a little deformed and misshapen, they werenāt burnt like the Exton cookies were.
āIf by unique, you mean bad, then I agree,ā said Seiji, eyeing the cookies with disdain.
āIām sure they taste better than they look,ā Nicholas said. He picked one up from the Halverton tray and took a bite.
Nicholasās face immediately scrunched up in disgust. āI think you guys used salt instead of sugar.ā
āWhat?!ā Gian exclaimed, marching over to the judging tableāaka the kitchen counter that had been cleaned off and laden with cookie trays. So much for anonymity.
Gian snatched the cookie away from Nicholas, inserting the pastry into his mouth. Immediately, he recoiled in disgust at the salty taste. Dejected, he sighed. āWe did...ā
āHey, itās okay. We still have to judge the other teamās cookies, as well,ā Bobby reminded. He picked up a cookie from the Exton platter.
However, Bobbyās bubbly demeanor changed the second the cookie entered his mouth. His face turned an alarming shade of green, and his cheeks puffed out as he tried not to gag. Curious, Nicholas picked up one from the same tray and had a nearly identical reaction.
Seiji picked one up to inspect and cast it aside harshly. āIām not eating either of these.ā
āTheyāre not as salty, but somehow these are even worse,ā exclaimed Nicholas. āThey taste like ash. Like, melt in your mouth, in a bad way.ā
āConcurred,ā said Seiji. āNeither team wins.ā
āWhat?!ā
āYou didnāt even have one!ā
āNo way!ā
āYou have to choose a winner!ā
āThis is such a cop out!ā
The uproar was loud and rowdy. However, the judges were having none of it. Rather than try to argue, they left the room, presumably to return to their sleepover.
āGuess this means we wonāt ever get to resolve our friendly competition like we wanted to,ā sighed Scott.
āYeah,ā agreed Jesse. He sighed. He sauntered up to the fridge, reaching for the top. From there, he pulled out an unopened package of Chips Ahoy. Though he had a mischievous glint in his eyes.
āI have a better idea. Letās scrape these monstrosities and have a Mario Kart tournament instead. The movie theater has enough room for everyone.ā
Scott smiled back. After all, what was a little Mario Kart among friendsāeven if you are sworn rivals?
Two fencing teams, both with bus trouble. One rest stop. And only one cafeteria.
This might just be the longest hour of Van's life.
A/N: Happy Fence Secret Santa, @nothingtoknow222! I'm your Secret Santa! I hope you enjoy this silly little piece with Halverton and Exton shenanigans. I had a lot of fun throwing the boys together in a space with no escape and making them awkwardly get along. Halverton and Exton are like two bitchy exes who are secretly desperate to impress each other.
There's a bit of implied shipping (Van/Marcel and Gian/Aster, plus mentions of Marcel/Harvard and Harvard/Aiden) but mostly it's just boys being idiots and some very competitive Tetris-playing XD (No-one @ me about how Tetris scores work, I used a Reddit thread to ballpark a "high-ish" score and then winged it from there)
Read this fic on AO3 or scroll on for the fic!
It was just a friendly, non-competitive local meet. But Exton would be taking part and this meant that to the Halverton team, the stakes were as high as any state final.
āI canāt wait for Marcel to behold the increased speed of my parry technique!ā Van said, reclined in his favoured position across the three seats at the back of the bus.
āAnd Aster wonāt know whatās hit him on the piste,ā Gian declared.
Ever the team leader, Scott tried to keep the group focused on the big picture. āBecause we donāt have a lot riding on the meet this weekend, I think we could use this as an opportunity to try out new strategy. Sungchul, remember the discussion you and I-ā
He was cut off by a loud BANG sound and the bus jolting. Scott, Sungchul, and Gianās eyes widened, and Van sat up straight. āWhat was that?ā
āI think... we might have blown a tyre?ā Sungchul said uncertaintly.
At the front of the bus, Coach was also looking concerned, going to quickly speak to the driver. When she came back, she looked stressed.
āOne of our tyres has gone,ā she confirmed to the team. āUnfortunately itās too far for us to keep driving the rest of the way on a bad tyre, so, weāre going to pull in at a rest stop to get it serviced. Hopefully it shouldnāt add more than an hour or two to our travel time.ā
The team nodded stoically, but inside, Van knew they were all groaning like he was. As much as two hours extra to get to the meet! Bouts didnāt start until tomorrow, but to Exton, it would look like they were bottling out. No doubt theyād gloat insufferably until the Halverton team arrived (and then make fun of them for the late arrival).
āOkay, Coach,ā said Scott. āYou heard her,ā he said to the team. āJust a couple of hours, and weāll be on our way to dominate the meet. We can use the time to discuss strategy.ā
Van caught Gianās eye and they both winced. Sure, they wanted to win, but Scott was so serious about it a lot of the time. A couple of hours in a rest stop discussing strategy sounded incredibly dull.
The driver signalled to turn off into the rest stop, and as they drove into the parking lot, Van noticed that there was another bus there - one that looked really familiar from numerous local meets and tournaments.
Scott blinked. āThat canāt be,ā he said.
āWait,ā Gian said, gleeful. āCould Exton be having bus trouble too?!ā
āMaybe they needed a break?ā Scott said, frowning, but he sounded uncertain. There was no real reason why Exton wouldnāt drive straight through to the meet, just like they would have done if not for the tyre issue.
They pulled into the parking space opposite the bus that looked extremely like Extonās, and sure enough, when they got out, they saw Coach Alessandra Donati was standing next to the vehicle, smoking a cigarette.
āGoodness,ā she said languidly. āDonāt tell me youāre having transport trouble, too.ā
Coach Brooks gave her a tight smile. āBlew a tyre out about a mile back. You?ā
Coach Donati exhaled a stream of smoke. āEngine problems. But Iām sure weāll be on our way in no time.ā
āIām sure,ā said Coach Brooks, and then turned to the team. āOkay, boys, thereās not much that we can do here except wait. With any luck, we can get the issue sorted quickly and get back on the road. Donāt go far; I want you back here in an hour, sharp, for a check-in.ā
āYes, coach,ā they all chorused.
Before they went into the rest stop, Van saw Coach Brooks wordlessly accept a cigarette from Coach Donati and light it up.
āThereās probably a lot of space in here,ā Van said hopefully as they went to enter the rest stop building. āMaybe we wonāt even run into Exton.ā
Sungchul gave a snort to express his doubt about that, and as they went inside, Vanās heart sank. The rest stop consisted only of a couple of shuttered shop fronts and a bare cafeteria with a few tables, a self-serve coffee machine, and a vending machine. Inside sat four familiar figures.
āOh, no,ā Gian muttered, stopping short and causing Van to bump into him. āThereās only...ā
ā...one cafeteria,ā Van finished hollowly.
The Exton team were slumped or hunched over in various positions of resignation and boredom when the Halverton team entered. Aster Leventis (or was it Thomas?) was the first to notice their arrival, and he straightened up, nudging Marcel. Jesse Costeās head whipped around and a gleam entered his eyes.
āOh,ā he said. āWhat have we here?ā
āJesse,ā said Scott, nodding formally. āIt seems like weāve both been having some transport difficulties.ā
āWhat are the odds?ā said Marcel, looking delighted. āVan.ā He gave a grin that looked more predatory than friendly. Van tossed his hair over his shoulder.
āMarcel.ā
āAster,ā said Gian, nodding to one of the Leventis twins. Aster - or Thomas - didnāt correct him, only smiled.
āHello, Gian.ā
They all looked at Sungchul, who simply raised an eyebrow and went to sit at a table a little way away from the Exton team.
Van, Gian and Scott followed suit, stiffly folding themselves into various uncomfortable chairs. A clock ticked loudly on the wall. Gian drummed his fingers.
It was going to be a long hour.
Outside in the parking lot, Coach Brooks accepted another light from Coach Donati and said conversationally,
āHow long do you think itāll be before we have a bloodbath on our hands?ā
Alessandra blew out a stream of smoke and considered. āI give it twenty minutes.ā
Five minutes dragged by agonisingly slowly. Van felt like every tick from that godforsaken clock reverberated in his soul.
It wasnāt as though he didnāt have ways to pass the time - normally on long bus rides to meets, he and Gian would be gossiping and speculating about the other fencers, recalling infamous events, and passing fencing videos to each other, Scott and Sungchul. One bus ride Sungchul had managed to get him to try an audio drama that he liked, although unfortunately it had lulled Van to sleep before the second episode.
But there was too much tension in the air for Van to act like they were just passing the time before a meet. After five more torturous minutes, however, he was ready to contemplate anything. Even a strategy discussion. That, though, was completely off the table with Exton within earshot.
Finally, the stalemate was broken by a rustling sound as Marcel reached into his bag and brought out... some knitting. Van blinked in surprise as Marcel arranged a ball of wool on the table next to him, unwound it a little, and then started adding rows, needles clicking in counterpoint to the ticking of the clock. Huh.
This seemed to signal a kind of collective release of tension as Sungchul sighed and sat back, and Thomas ā or Aster ā rummaged around in a pocket to bring out a bag of mixed nuts, which he placed on the table between himself and his twin.
Oh right, food. On cue, Vanās stomach growled. Heād forgotten to bring the protein bar that he normally carried with him on the way to fencing meets.
He poked Gian in the shoulder. āDo you have any snacks?ā
āYou watched me finish mine on the bus,ā Gian pointed out.
Van turned pleading eyes on Sungchul, who already had a pair of earphones in, and Scott, whose brow crinkled.
āThereās a vending machine,ā he said, jerking his thumb at it. āJust get something from there.ā
The contents of the vending machine were definitely not in Coach Brooksā diet plan, but this was an emergency. Van wandered over, chose a chocolate bar, and managed to scrounge up enough coins to pay for it.
The vending machine dispenser whirred promisingly, but then gave a horrible grinding noise. The chocolate bar sagged halfway out of its slot and didnāt fall.
āNo!ā Van gave the obstinate machine a thump on its side, which had no effect. āCazzo di macchinetta di merda eddai!ā The machine was impervious to threats, and also to Vanās increasingly forceful rattling. āMapporc-ā He gave it a shove. āPuttana maledetta-ā
Someone gave a cough behind him, and Van turned to see Jesse Coste standing there.
āAh ā itās stuck,ā he said, unnecessarily.
āCan I try?ā Jesse asked, and so Van stood back to let him access the machine. Jesse calmly appraised the vending machine and gave an almighty slam on one side with his fist. The chocolate bar meekly dropped to the bottom, letting Jesse pick it up and hand it to Van.
āThere you go.ā
Van took the chocolate bar and stared at Extonās captain. Watching Jesse Coste annihilate an opponent on the fencing strip was one thing; watching him annihilate a vending machine was another.
āHow did you...ā
āHotel vending machines are all the same make and design.ā Jesse shrugged. He inserted some coins into the slot, and a bottle of water dropped out of the machine, like the machine didnāt dare push its luck twice.
Van went back to join his teammates. Scott was chuckling, while Gian raised his eyebrows.
āDo you think I can get a can of fruit juice?ā he asked.
āIf you canāt, Jesse Coste can probably get it for you,ā Van said.
Someone gave a soft laugh, and Van looked over to see Marcel still knitting away; the thing interwoven with his needles was looking recognisably hat-shaped. It was a little mesmerising watching Marcelās hand flick and his needles move.
Van had never found crafts that interesting, but he was intrigued enough to say, āThat looks cool.ā
Scott made a noise somewhere between a snort and a choke.
Never one to back down from an implied challenge (especially from Exton), Van said, āIām sure I could master those just as well, if I tried.ā
Marcel raised an eyebrow. āWell, if you were prepared to take instruction from a superior knitter, then we could see.ā
One of the Leventis twins muttered, āJesus Christ, get a room.ā Van was drawing breath for an indignant retort when the other twin came back from the vending machine, putting a can of drink down in front of his brother. The grumpier twin (Van was pretty sure this one was Aster) looked at it and made a face.
āDid it have to be lemon?ā
āThere wasnāt any peach,ā his twin replied, a little tiredly, dropping back down into his chair.
Aster sighed ā and then looked up in surprise as Gian placed a can in front of him, picking up the lemon one.
āHere; it was the last one,ā he said, ears pink. āI know you like peach flavour best.ā
Asterās mouth hung open for a couple of seconds, before he said, āThatās Aster ā Iām Thomas.ā
āNo, youāre Aster,ā Gian said, mildly. āI can tell you two apart.ā
Asterās mouth closed again, and he gave a kind of shrug before opening the can of peach juice. Thomas grinned.
As Gian walked over to the Halverton table, Van raised his eyebrows. āIs this a part of ācrushing Extonā?ā he hissed.
āYouāre one to talk,ā Gian returned. Van had no idea what that was supposed to mean.
He dug through his pockets and took out a battered deck of cards, shuffling through it for something to do with his hands. Maybe he could talk Scott into a game of Scopa.
Over on the Exton table, Jesse checked his phone and made a noise of discontent. Marcel gave him a sly look.
āStill no reply?ā
āHeās probably busy training,ā Jesse said. He was speaking quietly, but his voice carried in the near-silent cafeteria ā and Van was straining his ears for potential gossip material. āIām sure heāll message back any day now. We used to spend all our time together ā he wonāt go silent on me forever.ā
Marcel smirked. āWell, he might be busy with that Cox guy.ā Jesse glared at him, unamused. āI canāt relate, though-ā Marcel pulled out his own phone. āHarvard is always very responsive.ā
āHarvard?ā Van repeated, forgetting that he was pretending not to listen in. āAs in, the Kings Row captain?ā
Gian and Scott both looked over, also thirsty for new gossip. Even Sungchul took out an earphone.
Marcel looked as smug as the cat whoād got the cream. āWeāre just having some fun,ā he said. āSeeing where it goes.ā For some reason, it made Van feel irrationally annoyed.
āDidnāt Harvard also go out with Dafna, a while ago?ā Gian mused. āFrom Coach Ponomorenkoās team?ā
Scott gave a snort. āI hope youāre prepared to face the wrath of Aiden Kane,ā he said, in a voice that carried.
Marcel glanced at him and raised his eyebrows. āAnd why?ā
Scott only smiled knowingly. Aster supplied, āTheyāre rarely seen without each other.ā
āAnd did Aiden ask Harvard out on a date? No?ā said Marcel. āHeās free to challenge me if he wants to prove himself.ā
Van was sure that heād bested Harvard on the piste multiple times.
āFencers are all so competitive,ā Sungchul murmured. His fingers were flying over his phone screen, and Van recognised that he was playing Tetris ā another entry on the list of things that Sungchul had casually mastered.
āWhatās your score now?ā he asked, idly.
ā500,671,ā said Sungchul. āIām going for a new high score.ā
Thomas Leventis raised his head quickly like heād sensed blood in the water. Looking back, Van would identify that as the moment everything went to hell.
āMine is 502,573,ā he said. āCan you beat that?ā
Sungchul lowered his phone very slowly.
āIn my sleep,ā he said.
āOh, boy,ā said Scott, at the same time as Jesse sighed, āHere we go.ā
Ten minutes later, Van was part of a tight circle of onlookers watching as Sungchul and Thomas spun blocks and erased rows at lightning speed. He had no idea what was happening, but it was apparently very important.
ā502,580,ā Sungchul said.
ā502,620,ā Thomas returned, immediately.
ā502,776.ā
ā502,881.ā
Van looked at the clock on the wall. āUh... I think we need to go check in with Coach?ā
āHereās the thing,ā Coach Brooks told the assembled members of Halverton and Exton who had managed to tear themselves away from the Tetris showdown. āThereās good news, and bad news.
āThe good news is that the Halverton bus is ready to go. The bad news is that Extonās engine problems are going to take a while longer to fix.ā Coach Brooks looked meaningfully at her team. āHowever, we do have room on our bus for some extra passengers.ā
Vanās eyes widened. The prospect of sharing a bus with Exton for the rest of the drive to the meet... Of helping Exton...
An hour ago, they all would have jumped at the chance to get one over on Exton by leaving them in the dust.
On the other hand, although Van would never admit it aloud, their rivals could sometimes be tolerable. And well, ācrushing Extonā was more fun when Exton was actually there to be crushed.
Scott made eye contact with his teammates, and Van gave a slight nod of assent.
āYes,ā Scott said to the two coaches. āWeāre more than happy to be generous with our bus space and help out a fellow team in need.ā
Aster rolled his eyes, while Jesse gave a nod that could be interpreted as gracious or mocking, depending on how you wanted to read it. āWeāre honoured by that generosity.ā
Praline! š For the ship ask game, how about #2, 9, 14 for the Weather Boys??? š¤
Hi Kwoc! Thanks for the ask :)
2. Who comes up with the best date night ideas?
I wouldnāt really say one of them is better at planning or suggesting a date idea over the other, but I do think that Scott would have the most variety.
I get the vibe that Scottās more likely to explore activities to do with Thomas and get out of the house to do things (not to say that he isnāt a comfy guy and wouldnāt be down for a movie marathon and cuddle session). As an avid LOTR fan, I think interests in fantasy-related activities comes with the territory (renaissance faires and DnD).
Thomas on the other hand occasionally suggests events they could go to from flyers that he might have seen or places heās been recommended, like a farmerās market. I think itās less planning and more āOoh whatās this?ā But itās fewer and far between the types of dates that Scott plans. Everything is inter-spliced with the tried-and-true mall date and classic ādrive around and park the car in a secluded spot to make outā session lol.
I do think that Thomas would be more open to doing things spontaneously the further into the relationship they are. For example, going to the local yarn store because some small business that Scott mentioned he likes just released a new batch of hand dyed wool, or Thomas having a craving for some pastry heās never made before and calls Scott to ask if he wants to go down to the store and buy the pan and ingredients with him.
Wow I didnāt think Iād have so much to say on this topic šš§¶āØ I just realized I made Scott a āI want to share my interests with you so that we can do them togetherā type of person and Thomas āthis made me think of you so letās do this activity togetherā kind of guy and I think thatās so cute? š„¹š They just fit ššāØ
9. Who believes in ghosts?
I had to sit and think for a bit on this one. I definitely think Scott is an all or nothing kind of guy, either he totally believes in ghosts, or not at all, while Thomas on the is open to the idea of supernatural forces but doesnāt actively believe or disbelieve in it. This is subject to change though while I solidify my thoughts writing these characters š¤
14. Whoās better at writing professional emails?
In high school? I think Scott would be better because he seems like the type to be very attentive to his words and reference āhow to write a professional emailā blogs. Thomas crosses me as the type to have close and amicable relationships with his teachers and just ask what he needs in-person or from his classmates. If for whatever reason he needs to email a teacher, it would be short and polite.
In college? I think they would both be very good at professional emails but in different ways. Thomas retains his preference for brevity, keeping his emails short and to the point, while Scott makes me think he knows just how to use his words in order to convince someone to grant him a favor or extend a deadline.
