Well, that was a loaded choice. Either theyād swim out to the island and she'd arrive looking like a drowned poodle, hair plastered to her scalp, clothes clinging in all the wrong placesāor they'd charter a little boat and she'd risk puking her guts out before they even reached shore. Between nausea and humiliation, it was hard to decide which fate was kinder.
Still, Aurelia straightened her shoulders and took a steadying breath. Sheād faced worse than a little seasicknessāor a bad hair day. This was Zidaneās family. The people whoād shaped him, the ones whoād known him long before she had. If they were going to share a life together, she wanted to meet them properlyāto look them in the eye and prove that she cared enough to endure a miserable trek and a churning stomach for the chance to be welcomed among them.
"Yes, absolutely, I do want to meet them." Her voice came out a touch too quickly, too eager, and she winced at herself before softening the edges with a small laugh. "Iām justā¦a little nervous, is all."
She twisted a loose strand of blonde hair around her finger, eyes flicking toward the island on the horizon rather than his face. It wasnāt that she didnāt want toāgods, sheād thought about this moment far too often on their hike to the port townābut there was a weight to meeting someoneās family, a different kind of vulnerability than she was used to. What if they didnāt like her? What if she said something wrong?
But then she glanced back at him, at the bright blue eyes than never failed to calm the fire inside her. Her heart steadied, warmth blooming in her chest. "I want to make a good impression," she added softly, almost shyly. "They raised someone I love very much. The least I can do is show them how much that means to me. So, how much Lien to charter a vessel?"
