This fall I had the honor of serving on a review panel for @centerforcraft with Rachel Winston, Black Diaspora Archivist, Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, The University of Texas at Austin, LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections Hrag Vartanian, Editor-in-Chief and Co-founder of Hyperallergic. Had to recuse myself from projects connected to students and people I know, of course - and am super proud of how many of our students and alums from @macraftstudieswwc applied (Looking at you, Maru!) Huge congratulations to all the recipients!!!! I cannot wait for you all to learn more about these amazing researchers and their projects. Announcement: The Center for Craft is excited to announce our inaugural Center for Craft Archive Fellows! The Craft Archive Fellowship supports archival research that tells more accurate and expanded craft histories, leading to a more inclusive future for craft. 8.12.2022 Returned from MACR Residency with Covid. Still pretty low energy, breathing shallow but inhaler helps. Scott has been amazing, yet again. Posting pics from the last month. This is our MACR office in Jensen, Warren Wilson College. Filled with supplies for Residency (we had to buy all things from dishes to coffeemakers to expo markers to tea back in 2017 - restocked this July). I barely spent any time here. Dani @dani.burke painted it, built the furniture (we didn’t have campus options) and added the rug. Jessie @gertrudepolyester joined during Covid, so working remotely has been the plan. We (Jessie and I) tagged things to store, ship, pass on, and will easily empty this office out by the program’s closure in June 2023. That poster of the questions, Ben @benlignel, from @lisanicolejarrett 100 Questions workshop is brilliant. Was in fall of 2018, still is now. ROM curator Deepali Dewan takes a closer look with special guest speakers, Met curator Shanay Jhaveri and Critical Craft Forum co-founder Namita Gupta Wiggers. Shanay Jhaveri explores how artists have responded to the city of Chandigarh, designed by the Swiss-French modernist architect, Le Corbusier, in the early years of India’s independence, while Namita Gupta Wiggers shares the thinking behind “craftscape”, a term she coined to describe the reframing of craft as something more than just a commodity. Almost everyone can name a teacher who offered transformative access to a creative life. How do certain teachers shape the ways we make and understand the worlds around us? Who are the big names, the unsung heroes, and those marginalized by strict disciplinary boundaries? And who have they taught? In a wide-ranging discussion seeking to answer these questions as they relate to craft, participants reflect on intersecting identities, matrilineal inheritances, and engaging with one’s ancestors as a way to form new craft knowledge. The program, launched in 2017, was created to offer the first low-residency model for graduate studies in critical craft theory and history. In announcing the planned closure, Provost Jay Roberts stated, “this was a very difficult decision for us to make. The program has been groundbreaking since its inception, and we were fortunate enough to have an internationally recognized scholar in the field to serve as the founding Director in Namita Gupta Wiggers. Namita, the program faculty, and the students have and will continue to contribute cutting edge scholarship that is shaping a newly developing field of Craft Studies. However, the pandemic and the economic slowdown combined with shifts in the graduate school market have made it increasingly difficult to meet our enrollment goals. While we regret losing this innovative graduate program, Warren Wilson will refocus our Craft and Craft Studies efforts at the undergraduate level, and we remain excited about the opportunities for Craft through ongoing efforts in the Art department to integrate craft into the curriculum."
