clarification: not content wise... but like which makes you happier? seeing a notif on tumblr or on AO3? weird question I know I’m sorry
definitely ao3 because:
i have anon commenting turned off on most of my fics but i don’t want to turn off anon on my blog because i think people engage more that way and also i hate the stress of deciding whether to reply publicly or privately
i feel less obligation to reply to ao3 comments quickly knowing the commenter will get a notification and not have to check back repeatedly to see if i’ve answered like they have to on tumblr if they’ve asked an anon question
ao3 comments are all in one handy place and not shoved haphazardly in a massive tag
they don’t show up on anyone’s feed and thereby annoy people who have no interest in me/the fandom/the fic
i don’t lose followers for getting too many of them (i lose about a dozen followers a day? i gain a couple too but the loss for this fic has been wild. i’m not hurt or bothered by it, just surprised)
the stats are tracked on ao3 so i can have a good idea of how well the fic has done engagement-wise, and it also shows people considering reading the fic how much other people have enjoyed it
people are nicer on ao3 than on tumblr. there’s always an ounce of fear/dread when i check my tumblr asks
nothing goes viral on ao3. if i phrase something wrong on tumblr and it gets reblogged by a popular blog, i can never take it back. tumblr has a higher risk in that regard
