Here’s some traditional Cuphead & Mugman art.
Day 8 - Innocence
“Jian Yi wait!”
“Zhengxi, you’re just too slow. We can’t wait! The quicker we get in and find one, the more of our life we get to spend with them! Come on!”
Zhengxi couldn’t argue with that, honestly.
Jian Yi was already halfway up the steps of the massive building while Zhengxi was still getting out of their car. He quickened his pace to please his husband. And, well, he was pretty excited too, not that he’d admit that.
They pushed open the heavy door together and were immediately met with a loud crashing sound.
“WHATEVER IT IS YOU BETTER FIX IT OR REPLACE IT!” was the response from an older woman they heard from somewhere in the large house.
They saw two young kids come running from the direction of the crashing sound, one with a small ball in their hands. The two disappeared from the room quickly, and Jian Yi and Zhan Zheng Xi were left alone once more, facing the large set up steps that sat across the otherwise almost empty room.
The noises didn’t stop, however, and a cacophony of sounds rang throughout the home.
“Should we go upstairs?” Zhengxi asked.
“Maybe? I think that’s where that lady’s voice came from.”
“Won’t hurt to try. Let’s go.”
They made their way up the seemingly-neverending stairway, dodging kids and toys as they did so. Final, after what Zhengxi described as “for- fucking -ever” -which Jian Yi had promptly smacked him for, as they were around kids- they arrived at the top of the stairs and at the open door of an office.
“Yoohoo~ we’re here for our appointment?” Jian Yi said as they walked into the room toward a cluttered and occupied desk.
“Oh! Yes, welcome! Jian Yi and Zhan Zheng Xi, right?” she responded. Her voice was much softer than it had been when they first arrived.
“Yes, that’s us. We were hoping to get everything sorted out today and take the little one home. Is that possible?”
“Absolutely! The only problem you might have is deciding which one is right for your family, since they’re all such lovely kids,” she said sweetly.
“Alright, great! Well, can we begin?” asked Jian Yi. He was so excited.
“Yes, of course. I’ve lined up a few children that I think would be good matches for your home, so I’ll start with them.”
She began pulling files from the filing cabinets around her. When she was done, she placed them all in a pile on her desk and stood quickly.
“I’ll go fetch them, yes?”
She walked calmly out of the room, but both of the men could hear her footsteps speed up dramatically as she ran down the steps.
“Jian Yi.”
“Yes, Zhengxi?”
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
They sat there in silence, holding hands and waiting for their lives to change.
It wasn’t but a couple of minutes before the footsteps were once again bounding along the steps. However, this time, there were many more smaller footsteps.
Jian Yi couldn’t contain himself. Zhengxi was so in love.
They walked in in a perfect line, following behind the grown woman. Six children in total. One of those six would be their’s.
They stood from their seats as the children lined the wall of the room. Jian Yi smiled wide, and Zhengxi did the same, on the inside.
“NO!” shouted one of the young boys that stood in line.
What?
“Miss Turner I told you I wanted a daddy AND a mommy! Not two dads! That’s disgusting!”
“David hush! I know what you said, but I picked them for you because they like all the same things you do. Sports, video games, and sweets!”
All smiles had faded.
“But, that’s not right Miss Turner!” another child piped up. “It’s supposed to be a girl and a boy, not both boys!” she said.
Others began speaking up in agreement, and by the end of the meeting, four out of the six children were yelling as the remaining two nodded their heads.
“They hated us…” Jian Yi muttered when the room was once again occupied by only the sad couple.
“Jian Yi, they’re just kids. They don’t understand what they’re saying,” answered Zhengxi, in a desperate attempt to comfort his lover.
“Yes they do! They know they hate us! They know we’re different from other parents! They don’t want us,” he cried, hot and painful tears pouring down his face.
Jian Yi was so used to being rejected, but it hadn’t hurt him this bad since middle school.
“Jian Yi. Listen to me,” Zhengxi paused to grab Jian Yi’s hands. “They don’t understand. They hear stuff from their friends, or on TV, and they repeat it. They aren’t to blame. And no, they may not want us, but they aren’t the right ones for us anyway, okay?”
“B-but..what if it never happens, Zhengxi? What if we can’t find one child that is okay with having gay parents?”
“We will. I promise. I know you, Jian Yi, and you know me. We are good together. And I’ll be damned if there isn’t a single child in this world that can’t look at us and see that. We will find them. We will. And until then, we’ll be complete together. We don’t need anyone to complete our family. We’ve been complete for a long time, and yes, raising a child would be a great addition to that family, but we can live until then. We’ve been through so much worse. It’ll all be okay baby.”
Jian Yi hugged him. He hated that Zhengxi was always right.
“Okay Zhengxi.”
They decided to leave the house. They were seemingly abandoned by Miss Turner, but as they reached the bottom of the steps, they heard her yelling once again in a different part of the house. Jian Yi believed she was speaking about manners.
They had almost reached the door when Zhengxi felt a tug on his coat from behind.
“Um, e-excuse me,” came a small voice from an equally as small girl. She had black hair, and multiple paint stains all over her yellow shirt and pants.
“Uh, yes?” replied Zhengxi, eloquent as always.
“M-my name’s Sammy and I h-heard you talking upstairs with Miss Turner. My room is close to her office,” she mumbled shyly.
“Oh, yeah,” replied Jian Yi, unsure of how to respond. “Hi Sammy. It’s nice to meet you. How old are you?”
“I’m n-nine. Well, um, I just wanted to ask you a question, really quick, if that’s okay?”
“Sure, go ahead,” Jian Yi responded. Neither men knew where this was going.
“Um, are you two…gay?” she asked, almost too quiet to hear.
“Oh. Uh, yeah. We’re gay. Why do you-”
“Really?! That’s great then! You’re here to adopt somebody right? Can it be me?”
Both stood at the door shocked. They didn’t know what to do. Jian Yi had been on quite the emotional rollercoaster within the past few minutes, but he was the first to smile once again.
“Absolutely! Definitely! We’d love to, Sammy!”
Then came the voice of reason.
“Um, Sammy? If you don’t mind me asking, why is it good that we’re gay?” Zhan Zheng Xi inquired hesitantly.
“Well, that’s because I’m gay too! So wouldn’t it be so much better if I had parents who were like me?” she replied. She was almost like a different child entirely.
“That’s…a really good reason isn’t it?” Zhengxi replied. He smiled as he picked her up in his arms.
Jian Yi joined them in a hug. They were warm together. Everything felt so natural.

The irl Kat was an acquaintance I made for a couple weeks with Togs. She seemed nice enough.
The virtual Kat is a NOOB. Nah, they’re the best. Been my friend for as long as I can remember being on this site and I wouldn’t have it any other way. ily.
whats your feeling about other Hide theories, like for example the clown theory, the washuu theory, being part of floppy, or something else? which one do you stick with i mean?
oh god i only saw this nowjust going through my inboxand i found thisim so sorry this is so late please forgive me anon
/sobs
Personally, I’m a Washuu theory supporter! I think the Pierrot, Kanoue, and Aogiri theories all have pretty okay arguments, but I’ve been convinced by the Washuu one. Especially because of this post.
I think Hide is either Yoshitoki’s son or else the son of someone closely affiliated with the CCG or the Washuu’s.
If Hide is the son of Yoshitoki, then perhaps he was the kind of son who wasn’t really attended to (hence all his late nights out with Kaneki *coughcough*). Maybe Matsuri was just too amazing and Hide, even with all the work he put in, never could outshine his brother in his parents’ eyes.
Maybe, because he never felt needed at home, he wanted to be needed by someone. Anyone. So when he met Kaneki, he jumped at the chance to make an actual friend outside his home who wouldn’t know anything about Washuu expectations. Kaneki did need him, and Hide loved being needed. I think that’s why Hide is so weirdly devoted to Kaneki. Hide never had a place or function at home and that made him feel horribly out of orbit. He needed an anchor or some sort. That anchor turned out to be Kaneki.
If not, then Hide is the son of some CCG parent/s, who, for some reason, may not have especially wanted him to be fully involved with the CCG.
Either that or Hide himself never felt the need or desire to be truly connected to the CCG. At least, not until he had to, for Kaneki.
If Hide had really wanted to be in the CCG or if his parents had wanted him to be in the CCG, he would’ve studied to become an investigator like them.
Or maybe his parents are in Germany 98% of the time. Germany is like the CCG mecca of the TG world, right? Maybe he learned about Ghouls from them and picked up some critical thinking skills (that he might also have inherited).
But for the most part, his parents were never really around. If they were never really around, then Hide probably clung to those little bits of knowledge they left him the same way Kaneki clung to books after his dad died. They reminded him of what little love he felt from people who were barely even there.
