assassin!Klaus/fence!Caroline au - the bickering is foreplay
Continuation of this preview from the other week. Want to hear them bicker? of course you do!
----------------------------------------
Tapping the tablet, she put in the password and felt a squirm in her stomach when it accepted ‘Caroline’ and started decrypting its files. He was just trying to get a rise out of her, that’s all.
“So what genre am I looking at here?” she asked, watching the bar move. “State secrets, banking info, gossip column?”
The corner of his mouth tipped up in amusement. “You don’t like surprises, sweetheart? Are you also the type that peeks at your packages at Christmas?”
She was, but he didn’t have to know that. “I like to be prepared,” she said superciliously, and the smile spread to both his cheeks as if she had answered his question.
The tablet dinged, and the files started filling the screen. Scanning through the documents, she controlled her face with long practice. There were about five congressmen she could sell this info to and make a killing, or about five of their opponents she could sell to and make less money but sleep better at night. Either way, it would be worth haggling with Klaus.
“Okay, so you know American politics ignore stuff like this all the time, right?” she said, naming a price that was better than she might have given someone else. He was a really good client, after all. “$75,000.”
Klaus smiled with teeth. “I know your elections rise and fall on very little. This could either save a career or break it.” The price he named wasn’t totally outrageous, but it was still steeper than she was willing to go. “One-twenty-five.”
“The people who still have careers in this country after multiple scandals would shock you. Ninety-five.” Maybe he would take her second price?
No such luck as he leveled her a patient look. “The entire world was spectator to that particular election, and we’ve been watching the threatening nuclear fallout ever since. Still, money changes hands with predictable regularity, and the game this will flush into the open will only cook new pies for you to stick your fingers in. One-ten.”
Caroline crossed her arms and tipped her head to the side, blonde ponytail swinging. “You know, I was going to take One-Ten, but then you put three metaphors into your last offer and just can’t let that kind of behavior slide, Klaus.” Shaking her head in disappointment only seemed to encourage the appearance of those dimples as a smile slid across his face. “One hundred thousand even, take it or leave it.”
“I believe I had better take it then,” he said lightly, “Along with–”
A faint scrape of a shoe against cement where no one should be and the flutter of the curtain covering the hallway to the back storeroom were the only warnings she had to drop, the tablet clattering to the ground.
