The god sings more often now, so quietly he is barely audible, lips hardly moving and words woven together loosely. The melody is slow and sad, drawn-out notes bittersweet and old as incense burning down into fresh blood on an altar, and yet there is more merriment than melancholy in his face upturned toward the sun and forest canopy.
He seems, at least, to be smiling. And he leans against the grove’s mother-tree with his hands in his trouser pockets and green air in the breaths he takes between stanzas.
But in an instant his spine stiffens, and the music fades from his tongue. There is something feral in how he raises his head, as though to sniff the air, and something predatory in how he braces his hands against the tree’s rough bark and turns on the balls of his feet toward the source of the disturbance.
Years ago he might have fled like the woodland spirit he appears to be -- but she has seen him, and he has grown more accustomed to standing his ground in the face of humiliation. And so he crosses his arms instead, frowns, and glares at Sybil accusingly.
