I’ve been seeing some good takes on potential tense moments between Yuna and Ilya, even if it’s subconscious thoughts bleeding into reactions. I think Yuna would have some preconceived notions about Ilya to dismantle, and Ilya would have some childhood trauma that influences his reactions at times.
One thing that I immediately thought about was that headcanon where Ilya will say things like “don’t speak to my husband that way” to their kids when they have an attitude with Shane. I love the idea of that happening on occasion with Yuna . She is going on one of her business tangents (borderline lectures) with Shane where she says something along the lines of him needing to perform better at a sponsor shoot or Irina Foundation event, and Ilya is not having it. He tells her something along the lines of “I would appreciate it if you did not speak to my husband that way” and shuts the conversation down.
Yuna would be gagged, David would be a bit proud, and Shane would be a mix of grateful and turned on. When Yuna gets over feeling offended by the comment, I think she would also be a bit proud of him and happy that her son had a partner that will prioritize him.

Random thought of the night about how a single Shane comment accidentally leads to a mutual kink discovery and an eventual feeding dynamic
Maybe this becomes a full fic one day if I can actually convince my brain to functionally write something lol
Ilya convinces Shane to enjoy himself at Scott and Kip’s off season wedding because 1. his husband deserves it and 2. Ilya is in the middle of medication change and drinking makes him feel like shit during a med or dose transition so Ilya can be the sober one
Shane mostly skipped the cocktail hour hors d'oeuvres, aside from the two bites he accepted from Ilya who insisted he eat something before he drinks. He eats his salmon and vegetables, leaving most of the roast potatoes behind during dinner, and he skips dessert under the excuse of being full from dinner.
However, he does end up enjoying a few glasses of red wine and both his and Ilya’s champagne from the toast. Shane is what Ilya affectionately refers to as a clingy, cute wine drunk. He wants to always be holding Ilya’s hand, and he’s teetering between sweet and sassy with his comments all night.
When they make it back to their hotel room, Ilya watches Shane clumsily undo his button down and asks if he would like some late room service or if he’s still full from dinner. Shane mumbles something that Ilya can’t hear before throwing himself down on the bed, whining about how the room is “kinda spinning”.
Ilya asks Shane to repeat himself and eventually gets an annoyed “I said I’m never full” which leaves Ilya confused. They go back and forth, Shane mainly repeating himself over and over while Ilya attempts to get more out of him than just those words, until Shane admits that he can’t remember the last time he ate until he was “actually full in his stomach” instead of when his “brain decided he should be done eating”.
Ilya hates that. He is upset that Shane has conditioned himself to limit his enjoyment of food, and he’s upset with himself for not noticing that more. It becomes a goal for him in that moment to do what it takes to feed Shane more. Not to make him feel bad or wrong in how he thinks and functions, but to show him that he’s allowed to enjoy food and actually nourish his body fully. They had come a long way since the painfully restrictive diet Shane used to follow, but clearly, it still wasn’t going as well as Ilya thought.
Without second guessing himself, Ilya orders room service. Nothing crazy, but something filling and what Shane would consider a treat on a date night or celebration dinner. He gets Shane comfortable and relaxed before gently encouraging him to eat when the food gets delivered to their room.
Neither can or will admit it until much later, but that night shifts something for both of them.
Shane cleared his plate, thanks to the wine and his husband’s loving words. He actually felt satiated, lulling him into a deep and content sleep as he clung to Ilya with a full, warm belly. Now wasn’t that an incredible feeling?
And Ilya felt a rush. It was intimate and strangely emotional, but it was also…sexy? Why was Shane eating a full meal so satisfying? No, why was choosing that meal and being the one to get Shane to eat it so satisfying?
The thing both remember most from that night was waking up and thinking, “damn, when can I convince him to do that again?”
While I am a firm supporter of chubby Shane Hollander, I do also love the thought of chubby Ilya because yeah, of course, it makes sense.
Post retirement Ilya loving the fact that he can relax and eat whatever he wants, skip workouts with no consequences, and doesn't have to maintain his speed and agility anymore. He develops a dad bod real quick, even before the eventual adoption of their two children goes through.
Shane may love it more than Ilya. While Ilya has softened up and rounded out, Shane has gotten lean and toned. He's taken up long-distance running and stayed on the ice as a special assistant to both Ottawa's MHL and PWHL teams. He doesn't feel the need to stay in shape specifically for his public image, but it certainly helps Shane accept the invites he still receives for brand deals and appearances.
Because of their differing retirement choices, Ilya looks even bigger next to his husband. Shane eats up the size difference, almost obsessed with the way Ilya's much heavier weight feels on top of him now. He likes how Ilya's clothes almost look oversized on him, and he finds himself happily staring when Ilya wears an older shirt that clings to his softer middle.
And if Shane purposefully orders more food than he knows he can finish whenever they go out to eat so he can hand it off to his husband, that's between him and the hockey gods who gave him the joy of chubby, content Ilya Rozanov.
I have been thinking a lot about early stages of gaining Shane, especially with the wonderful art @hollanderscafe has been making. I was thinking about a scenario where Shane would have this stage prolonged or recurring in a way that ends up training his body to expect it. I make no promises, but this may develop into a full work one day, especially if people vibe with it.
After Shane joins the Centaurs and they finally live together, Ilya becomes very concerned about Shane's diet, even more than he already was. Shane finally gives in that first summer and says, "Fine, you get the summer, three months of no diet, then back to it for the season."
Ilya is thrilled to take what he can get. And in the beginning, it is truly born out of the desire to make his husband more relaxed and gentle with himself. Ilya wants Shane to enjoy a nice dessert with him or eat random snacks while they watch a movie. He wants Shane to be able to find a balance that allows him to actually enjoy food.
The first summer isn't anything too crazy, maybe 10 pounds in his thighs and ass, which is barely noticeable to anyone aside from Ilya. And those pounds are gone in a blink once Shane is back in the gym.
The next summer, Ilya is prepared and uses his time effectively to spoil his husband. Shane can't say no to a sweet, persuasive Ilya, resulting in nearly 20 pounds this time.
His swim trunks are tight on his thighs, his abs have lost definition, and his face is adorably softer. Only to melt away into firm muscle within the first few weeks of camp workouts.
It becomes a welcome routine for both of them because Shane secretly enjoys the relief of ditching his diet and loves the way Ilya becomes even more attentive and affectionate. It also doesn't hurt that the bulk and cut are actually super effective for Shane as well. Ilya feels like he's living a dream during their summers. A soft, compliant husband eating well at his hand is right near the top of his fantasy list, and he actually has it.
By the time retirement comes off the back of one more Stanley Cup win, there is no question that their typical summer routine will take place. Ilya has go-to recipes for hearty traditional meals and dense sweet desserts. Shane feels that familiar shift in his brain to relax and let go, accepting the food his husband hands him without hesitation.
However, early September comes, and for the first time in nearly twenty years, there is no training camp on the horizon. Shane's body is 27 pounds heavier, not 30 (a clarification he makes firmly whenever Ilya brings it up, to which Ilya always responds 'yet').
His brain is ready for the shift back, but his schedule does not call for it anymore, and if he's being honest, his heart really isn't in it either. Maybe Ilya is right after all...

So, I keep thinking about different scenarios of Shane realizing he's into weight gain, since discussions around kink discovery have been popping up a lot, and this one specific canon divergent one has been stuck in my head.
It is a rewrite of the Vegas Incident™️ where the scenario plays out the same, except Ilya has been putting on weight since Sochi. He was coping with everything following the Olympics by comfort eating. By the time he and Shane see each other at the awards, Ilya has maintained around 20 pounds of his gain after losing a bit during Boston's cup run. It can be hidden under his jersey, oversized athletic gear, and tailored suits, so most people haven't noticed.
Shane is greeted with the same view in the penthouse following the awards. Ilya with his open shirt and widespread arms, but also sporting a bit of belly protruding over the waistband of his dress pants. It awakens something in Shane instantly. He has a deep need to get his hands on Ilya's newly acquired softness, to appreciate it in a way that he hopes no one else can.
While he would never admit it, Ilya held some insecurity around the weight he's gained, especially when he considers how trim and toned Shane Hollander will react. But what a surprise he gets when Shane can't keep his eyes or hands off Ilya's waist.
Ilya anticipated leaving Vegas with a deep sense of regret and a pressing urge to diet, but instead, all he can think about is how Shane might be disappointed if he loses the weight. Shane anticipated leaving Vegas with frustration in his lack of willpower and a firm decision to cut off Ilya, but now, he's thinking about how nice it would be to feed Ilya dinner before they have sex next time.
It's been a minute since the company discussed almond mom Yuna, but I have been thinking about her with a college version of Shane. I was inspired by the frat AU discussion that has been floating around lately, but this is a bit of a divergence from that.
Shane grew up with her monitoring all his food, but it felt healthy and caring because it was his normal. She made sure he had enough energy and proper nutrition for hockey without ever offering much indulgence. Sugar was incredibly discouraged, and drinking calories was essentially off the table.
He had been considered small but so fast as a young hockey player that his size was fine, but as he got into his teen years and started meeting scouts, everyone said they hoped he would grow a bit if he wanted a shot at going pro. Some even plainly said they were concerned that he was going to be too injury-prone with how lean he was compared to other guys.
When Shane signed to play in college, Yuna's lectures immediately started. The warnings of the freshman fifteen were more threatening and prevalent than any discussions of academic or athletic performance. The only concerns around partying were wrapped in the packaging of alcohol being very calorie-dense and carb-heavy. She wanted to know the school's nutritionist and mapped out every healthy food store or restaurant near campus.
All this setup is just to say that Shane finds new joy in hockey while playing in college for two reasons. Ilya and food. His team provides him access to more food in one day than Yuna would have prepared for him in almost a week growing up. They put him on a plan to gain weight and build muscle, and it's glorious. Being hit on the ice doesn't hurt nearly as badly anymore. He has way more energy and confidence in his body.
And Ilya was an even bigger surprise than having freedom around eating. He knew of Ilya through the scouting process, but also playing against him in a few international juniors tournaments. Ilya lived in Boston with his mother, Svetlana, and Svetlana’s mother after they left Russia together. Shane and Ilya live across the hall from each other on the hockey floor, play on the same line, and generally spend almost all their time together after just a few weeks of knowing each other.
Ilya kissed Shane for the first time, walking back to the dorms after the first hockey team party, and the rest was history. Now he has a boyfriend and a team who encourage him to eat more, celebrate their wins, and accept compliments. Plus, Shane may not be great at reading people, but he feels pretty sure that Ilya likes his body more as it grows, too.
His parents' first visit for his season opener was not too bad because all the weight he put on was almost entirely muscle. David is so impressed and supportive, telling Shane he's never looked better on the ice, but Shane can tell Yuna is struggling with it. She's already made comments about being careful because bulking can be a slippery slope, and reminding him to talk to his coaching staff about maintenance. Shane doesn't tell her that his coaching staff were some of his biggest supporters in putting on more weight.
They both liked Ilya and were excited to meet their son’s boyfriend officially, but Shane couldn’t help the small moments where Yuna would make a face at Ilya offering Shane a bite of something or putting more food on his plate. After his parents left, Ilya gently broached the subject because he noticed as well, and Shane finally explained what his childhood was like with food. He had never told anyone about Yuna's lectures and routines before, and Ilya vowed to himself right then that he would not let Shane question his body when they were together.
By the time Shane graduated, he had been named co-captain alongside Ilya, he set a program scoring record, he won two national championships, he and Ilya were both drafted by pro teams, and he was at least 60 pounds heavier in muscle and fat, which made him an absolute menace on the ice. He knows that his mother still struggles with it because she simply cannot stop herself from commenting on how much he eats now, but as Shane continues to rack up accolades and praise, Yuna’s words carry much less weight than he does now.
Last thought of the night before I go to bed because I can’t get chubby Shane out of my head (shocking)
We know our boy probably has some sensory needs and safe preferences, especially with clothing. And we obviously know his food issues are very rooted in control. I think an aspect we can consider more is that control is not simply a grab at having one source of control in his life, but it is a chain reaction for control over many things.
For example, controlling his diet means maintaining his weight which means less physical changes which means he can keep his same safe clothes. Gaining weight is not the only risk of breaking his diet; it’s actually just the umbrella of many smaller risks.
All that exposition is just to say that when Shane does allow himself to be more lax and accept that his body can change, clothing must be approached with a strategy. He talks with Ilya about how the best choice may be proactively sizing up all of his wardrobe staples, so he will not run out of safe options.
That overall size up hides his weight gain for quite a while from other people but also from Shane himself on some level. His clothes have room for him to grow, so subconsciously, he tells himself that his body has barely changed.
However, Shane knows his body very well. When he chooses to actually think about, he is very aware of his gain and how much bigger and softer his body is getting, but in that safe pocket of his brain where he can turn that intentionality off, he can tell himself “my clothes are too big so that means I can eat more” and the amount he’s gained is instantly minimized.
And Ilya also knows Shane’s body and mind very well, so as soon as he picks up on that, he utilizes that mindset too. Dropping comments how Shane looks so small in his big oversized hoodies, but then can flip a switch in bed and worship every inch of Shane’s added softness.
It’s like one big safety blanket to ease change in any way possible for Shane, and when the time finally comes for his sized up wardrobe to actually start fitting him, they just size up his closet all over again.
