The thing with the 'Crosshair will sacrifice himself for the batch' theory isn't just that it's an overdone plot (even though it is) but like.
He already has. Not just in being tortured, though that is part of it, but because when he had the opportunity to try to run he didn't even try to make it out. He made it to a communications hub to warn the batch knowing full well he was going to get caught and taken back. He told them to hide.
As far as Crosshair's concerned, there isn't going to be a rescue. There isn't going to be a last minute save. He thinks he's just going to get tortured and eventually die, like, he has zero expectations of anything else. He's already decided to suffer and die for them. The sacrifice has already been made and there's no need for him to do it all over again.
