#things get deep

                           HEAVINESS  lingers,  and   navi  is  slow  to  nod,  ‘  i  get  it  . . .  but  that  doesn’t  mean   you   gotta   speed  the  process  up  you  know?  ’  VOICE  soft  as  he  continues,  ‘  you’ll  be  happy   but   for   now?  ...  well  for  now  you’re  just  discovering  who  you   are  ’  beer   between  knees   as   they   sit   on   STEPS,  you   can   hear   abuela’s  music   playing  softly  in  the  background,  ‘  you  know  you   got   US  ’  navi  nods  towards  the  house   as   he  hands  her  beer,  ‘ lemme  tell  you    somethin’  nina,  NO  ONE’S   got   it   ALL   figured  out  ’  EYES  widen  as  warmness  radiates,  ‘  when  you  do?  you   do.  ’  SHRUGS,  ‘  i’m  just  trying  to  figure  out  what  i  want,  what  i  need  to  do  ’  he  looks  down  the  street  as  the  sounds  of  washington  heights   engulf,  ‘  all  i  know  is  that  i  need  a  vacation sabes a lo que me refiero  ?  NOW  i  know  you  know  what  i  mean  ’  LAUGHS  lightly  as  he  sighs  once  more,  ‘  been  going  crazy  in  that  tienda  since  i  can  remember  ...  there’s  NEVER  enough  time,  is  there?  ’

It could be worse. I hate this one so much, not only because it brushes off someones situation as if to say that ones problems aren’t important, and we are taught this from such a young age too. ‘Don’t complain, someone has it worse than you,’ Yeah someone does, that doesn’t invalidate your problems though. I also hate this saying because I say it a lot, and then internalize all the emotions and problems, because there are others in my life who have it harder than me, and they need me to be strong. Just wish someone would see me and would be strong for me sometimes too. Is that so much to ask?  

One of the things that bugs me more than words can express is that the mentality “I’m not offended by it, ergo it can’t be offensive”. Especially coming from those who don’t meet problems with it on a regular basis (i.e. a skinny person not understanding what’s wrong with the negativity associated with being fat). But at the same time, I also think that some people are too sensitive. And now I feel like I want to have my cake and eat it too and it’s like “ergh”. What do you all think?
