thick and thin
So last week in Literary History, we learnt about thin description and thick description. And it occurred to me how Tumblr is a perfect example of both.
Thin description:Β βoh man, Tumblr is so superficial. All people do is post and reblog pictures of celebrities and places and stuff.β
Thick description:Β βEr. No. Tumblr is a place where people post and reblog pictures of people whose art and thoughts they respond to deeply, whose creative efforts (whether film or photograph or music or vine) have provoked thought and/or realisation in the poster/reblogger, have reflected their own joy or trauma or history, of people in whose lives and histories the posters and rebloggers are deeply invested. Where people post and reblog pictures of places and objects that say so much about what their own hopes and dreams and anxieties are (please donβt expose those things unless they point to that awareness first), where everything is in fact a manifestation of much more depth than you can see, you patronising ignorant fuck.β
