My new years goal is to stay masked even when everyone I'm around isn't (aka in class and with patients) because I am beyond over getting sick. And considering one of my colleagues came to class while testing positive and actively symptomatic for COVID, I can't trust them to take anyone's health seriously. I'm not letting these bastards kill me out of spite.
Sorry to hear about the autoimmune diagnosis. I can believe it but it still sucks. I hope you get some fun stuff to knock off your bucket list! Stay as safe and healthy as possible out there.
As a disabled gal who has been masking consistently since 2020 now, THANK YOU for giving a shit about the community spread. I've gotten ugly looks from time to time and been a lone masker nearly everywhere I go, but I have only been sick once since 2020 and that was when I got Covid at work (a positive case from a colleague who said it was "allergies" spread in a cramped conference room where I was the only masked person there). I've given solidarity nods to any masker since 2022. 😅
I too am living out of spite. I'm lucky to still have a job, but I transferred from my old office when they said my reasonable accommodations would make pre-disableds feel "uncomfortable". They suffered for 6 months after I left and half the team bailed when they couldn't carry the weight I left behind. Fuck 'em!
Autoimmune disease is a damn joke, but I am thankful to have a couple friends and partners who have stayed and who care. All the ones who said I was overreacting about the dangers are now constantly coughing, can't weather allergy shifts, can't do the work they used to, can't remember shit, can't stay awake, etc. Like many people who were disabled pre-covid, I've stopped trying to help them. They can figure it out and make peace with their dealt hand as I have had to.
I'm sorry to hear you've been sick and that your colleagues lost their will to care. What's been harrowing for me is, every fictional portrayal of mass disease like this had a better response from governments and citizens than we've had. I honestly thought we'd get something like The Division, can you believe that? LMAO I replayed it over the holidays to cheer myself up! 🤣
