The Werewolf, the very first werewolf film which was made in 1913, was lost in a fire in 1924. This film was described by Thomas Aylesworth in the following terms:
"The first werewolf picture, called, naturally, The Werewolf, was made in the United States in 1913. But it was actually a wolf girl film and was based upon an old Navajo legend. Watuma, an Indian girl, comes back to life one hundred years after her death to look for the ghost of the evil man who killed her boyfriend. To accomplish this, she, for some reason or other, decides to turn herself into a wolf."
There are said to be no remaining copies of this early short film. Standard film stock of that era had a nitrate base that would decay rapidly if not stored in optimum conditions, and was very combustible, ala the movie theatre scene in Inglorious Bastards. Low humidity, climate controlled conditions are necessary to keep these films from decaying. So many films have been lost over history to decay without having been recorded into other mediums for the world to enjoy; they are gone forever.
In the 21st century, we tend to think of things like films and music being eternal, since they are recorded and saved digitally. Silent film and early media remind us that not everything would last forever, unless we are very careful to preserve these treasures. I love all things old, particularly film, music, and antiques; seeing some of these things disappear forever, or hearing the story of their destruction makes me sad. We should work to preserve our past, not destroy it.
