"My mom wanted at least one of her kids to become a monk for a period of time, so that it would help shape our character. So I became a monk - for a month. I shaved my head and eyebrows, stayed in a temple, and it was one of the best experiences of my life. But I didn't learn much. The teachings of Buddhism are interesting, but they're very difficult to relate to. When you are out there in the world, taking photos, touching people's lives, falling in love, you can relate to it. When you are cycling down Siem Reap and you see children walking 12 kilometers to a little school, and watch them be happy just because they get to study, while you yourself are getting the best education - you start cherishing it more. Listening to people, watching them, understanding them, that teaches you a lot more I think."
