todays progress on the suitcase itself.

started off thinking that lining the inside of the case with the slides would be enough, but because of its depth, it just looked too flat. 

instead, i took a piece of cardboard and covered it with burgundy paper. the idea here is like a mini gallery, and is thus a much better way of displaying the slides. i cut out where i wanted the slides to stand, and then learned i needed to fix them in place (or they would be easily knocked over). i went in with superglue to hold them down.

my original idea to accompany the slides was running small LED lights under the board and have them coming up through to illuminate the individual slide so the picture was visible. however when i tried this on the prototype, the effect the LED had was minimal. although this would have worked well in juxtaposing new and old technology (my main motif,) it didn't serve its purpose. 

the 60s hollywood images i ordered arrived today and so i made a start on the edits for the top portion of my suitcase. 

inspired primarily by Naomi Vona and Melinda Gibson, I'm looking to take these old images through into the digital, modern age through the materials I'm using to manipulate them (marker pens, found embellishments, tape, thread etc). I've worked in similar ways before, making old postcards appear ‘contemporary’ by my use of texture, pattern and colour, and this is something i love doing.

after completing my first few, i realised i will need to focus more on the colour scheme - theres a lot of pink going on, which will clash with the burgundy suitcase if i overdo it.
