I don't think he'd realize he wasn't sexually attracted to Shinji, because he has no other experience with sex, how Lilin experience sexuality, limited understanding of sexual attraction, no exposure to writing on the matter, and as far as Shinji goes, he knows he enjoys having sex with him and wants to, knows he is not sexually attracted to anyone ELSE (either), knows he has perfectly functioning genitals, some form of a sex drive (a weird one - more on that later), and can be sexually aroused and get off. -Shinji would absolutely take his asexuality personally and make it about him and how he should be "the exception" - even if it's only in his head and he hates himself for it and knows Kaworu being ace really doesn't change anything. -Ace or not, Kaworu has masturbated (alone) maybe twice in his life, got bored, and went to go do philosophical white haired anime boy stuff instead. -His asexuality IS highly linked to his being non-Lilin, making him a bit of a poor example of an ace character. -He's probably demiromantical/aro. His love for Shinji is intense and impossible to label or place - he would be perfectly happy to see Shinji involved with someone else, as long as he was happy, and would likely only knowingly pursue a monogamous romantic relationship with him on Shinji's prompting. -his sex drive is there, but extremely linked to Shinji. Not Shinji? Not interested. Also if Shinji is not interested, he is not interested. -however he is curious about his Lilin body and Lilin sexuality and would be interested in having sex just for the experience. -he waxes rhapsodic about the nature of lust and and Lilin sexuality and says ambiguous things about ATF penetration a lot. In a way, I guess he understands Lilin sexuality more than anyone - just not sexual ATTRACTION.... -sex is about closeness and trust and experience for him - hence being so linked to Shinji.
