Tumblr will probably eat the quality of this but, have a v self indulgent @exilethegame verse Didi (@sysba’s baby) I’ve been working on on this on and off for a while lolll
THIS.....has been a bit of a drag tbh. Took me far too long to get through this one and, honestly? Its not that complicated. I just made it worse bc I just didn't wanna do it. On top of a brand new brainrot taking over I just wanted to get it done at this point and move on-though I am happy with it overall. At least that's something.

Usually, the blessing of the angels was not a massive problem. The eyes looked like tattoos; fresh ones, black and crisp despite some having been on their skin for over a decade. They covered their chest, back, arms and had lately begun creeping up their neck. Ash did appreciate the eyes not venturing towards their lower body. Not that there was any part of them, physical or mental, that the angels did not know every millimeter of, but one liked to think oneself unobserved around ones private parts. Although they supposed the eyes would spread, eventually. They had only gotten more numerous over the years. At last count, a few months ago, there were 97, but they had spotted a new one since.
The first eye appeared when they were young. They didn’t remember the exact year, but it was not very long after their mother died. Which was why, presumably, mum had assumed it was a tattoo when they spotted it, and gotten so terribly upset. Not mad, not exactly. She kept saying she was grieving too, they wer both grieving, lashing out was an understandable reaction, but getting a tattoo? Those were permanent. Ash had been quite confused, as they hadn’t noticed it yet. Otherwise, they would have known to hide it, but it was on their shoulder blade.
They eyes didn’t hurt, burn they did sort of burn when the angels looked through them. A gentle burn, like a toe dipped into a too hot bath. Mildly unpleasant but not painful. Ash did appreciate that they knew when the eyes were being used, though. That they were not always open, as it were. They were always open visually, though. They did not, to Ash’s knowledge, blink or move their empty pupils about, which they had always thought was quite a shame. Would have been cool to have moving tattoos, although difficult to explain away until more impressive tattoo technology was invented.
Ash did have to hide their not-tattoos, though, to some extent, but it was easy enough. Long sleeves and high collars and some heavy duty make up for the ones across the backs of their hands. The office they currently worked at did not enjoy tattoos, but it was the place the angels had given them. Their orders were diffuse, and difficult to interpret and even more difficult to understand, but this office was involved in some cyber security situation and apparently even the very low level data entry type job they did was useful. Somehow. Despite the fact they had to dress like a drone and drink terrible office coffee and pretend to give a shit about their co-workers. Think about it like being a spy, they told themselves, a cool spy, like in the movies. It was very hard to feel like a cool spy in that office. Which was why they always changed back to normal human clothes on their way home, wiping off the concealer on their hands.
It was on their way home that they spotted it. A creature. Not an angel, though they knew those hovered above the city sometimes, keeping watch from afar, but some… thing. A dark shape, with a familiar large glowing eye, but- but the silhouette was wrong. Off. It had arms and legs, for one thing, quite clearly. They spotted the thing on a rooftop as they waited for their bus, and immediately abandoned their plans. This was something to be investigated. If they were not the angels’ only operative then they deserved to know, right? Even if this guy definitely fell more into the category of creature than person, if such distinctions even meant much any more.
They cut through alleyways and ran past traffic without much care for their own continued safety. This creature- they had to know. They had to find it.
It was getting dark outside, and a dark shape far away was hard to find, and eventually they were left panting and unpleasantly sweaty, leaning against a streetlight and squinting at the buildings above. Nothing. Not even the familiar glow of an angel hovering anywhere nearby. They were close to giving up when they spotted something, a glowing shape, in an alleyway across the street.
They jogged over the street, just barely avoiding getting hit by a bus, and into the alley. Was this maybe a tiny bit reckless? Almost certainly, but the angels would keep them safe. They always did. Even from what looked to be one of their own. Ash trusted them with their life, and many more important things.
The alley was dark, and they couldn’t see the shape, until they heard a noise from behind a dumpster.
«Hello?» they called, «are you-»
Are you what? A friend? A half angel of some sort? A colleague?
Hesitantly they crept closer, flicking on the flash light on their phone, and then, as they came around the dumpster, dropped it in shock. Also because they were aggressively shoved back against the wall, a clawed hand round their neck.
They stared up in a massive glowing white eye, like those of the angels, but there was no halo. However, where the angels were all nebulous dark shapes with many pale hands, this was indisputably a physical creature, with broad shoulders and powerful arms. There were openings in its lower arms, allowing light through, and matching ones on its calves. The arms ended in two thick clawed fingers and a thumb, the feet in two long clawed toes. Its skin, if it was indeed skin, was a dark grey, an odd texture.
Ash gasped for air, clawing at the hand that held them. After a moment, it loosened, enough for them to get some air, for their feet to feel more stable on the ground. Not enough to get away, though.
«Are you- the angels- you’re with them?»
Ash pulled up the sleeves of her jacket to show their eyes.
«Me too, look! Not an enemy.»
They felt a single eye on their throat gently burn, someone looking through, keeping an eye on them. Literally. The grip on their neck loosened a tiny bit more, and the figure seemed to slump. What were they? Not human, but not an angel either. Something made by the angels?
«Who are you?»
Their voice was a choked whisper, and despite noise from the street it sounded too loud to their own ears. The creature remained still for a moment, then made a movement with their free hand as if to remove a hood, and the large eye against the vague black shape disappeared. In its stead was a head, covered in the same dark grey skin. A single glowing eye shone, larger than a normal one, in the centre of their forehead. Below, barely visible in the dark, were two regular eyes. Or had been, anyway. The eyelids had been sown shut with pale thread. There was a flattened nose, and below it a thin slit of a mouth, too wide, and partly open to reveal rows of tiny sharp teeth. Horrifying and fascinating in equal parts.
«Did you- do you, I mean, work for the angels?»
The thing hesitated, then an almost imperceptible shake of its head. It used its free hand to cover the open eye on Ash’s throat.
«You don’t want them to see? You- you used to work for them?»
A nod.
«They made you like this?»
Another nod.
Shit. Was that Ash’s future? Twisted into a thing like this?
«You used to be human?»
It nodded again, and now released Ash’s neck entirely, though the hand covering the eye remained. It did not want the angels to see. Was it on the run? How could you possibly run from creatures that saw everything? Did the angels want to hurt it? Did the angels want to hurt Ash?
«How long?»
It shook its head, pulling the veil of darkness over itself again, and pushed Ash to the ground. In the seconds it took them to reorient themselves again, it was gone. They felt all the eyes buring, now. A flare of unpleasant heat across their upper body. Now, it almost hurt.
