1. Who were the Picts?
Although not much is known about the Picts as they left no written records, they are thought to be the descendents of indigenous Iron Age people around the area of northern Scotland. The earliest written account mentioning the Picts dates from 297 AD. In the same way the term “European” is used today to describe people from a group of countries, ‘Pict’ was a blanket term applied to an agglomeration of different people in northern Scotland. These people had different cultures and possibly different languages.
The Roman threat caused the Picts to band together to fight against them. By the time the Romans abandoned Britain in the 5th century AD, the tribes of the Picts had formed what would later be called the Pictish Kingdom. This kingdom was comprised of multiple federations, each ruled by its own king.
In 843 AD, the Picts unified with the Scots under Kenneth Mac Alpin. Giric, Kenneth's brother, is the last ruler mentioned as `king of the Picts'. After his death, the Picts were never spoken of in history again.
The Picts left behind many carved stones, covered in mysterious symbols, that have baffled historians to this day.
