The last viewpoint character in A Study of Ash and Smoke is Varda, a pseudo-Viking warrior princess with a polar bear named Blizzards as bond-animal. The name Varda was inspired by the Valar of the same name in the Silmarillion and LOTR. In Quenya (yes, I possess this level of geekery) the name means 'lofty'--a word that pretty much sums up this character. She's towers both physically and in presence. The only one with an even more undeniable will is her mother and queen, Vendla. Varda is a survivor. She's been tried, tested, tempered. Throw things at her. This is Lance, the only viewpoint character in A Study of Ash and Smoke who isn't noble or royal. He's from the slums in Aelland and makes a living as a procurer. When a plague breaks out in the slums, he must navigate the illness and death. Lance is a product of my editor saying something along the lines of 'make me care about the slummers'. I figured the only way to do that was to put someone among those infected with the plague, to show how a person deals with it all. I'm so glad she made that comment, because Lance has become a solid personal favourite, but also a character loved by the betas. He's rough and raw, and has so much heart.
