My very angst ridden teenager self, deeply enamored of thrash, purchased a copy of State of Euphoria, anthrax's fourth studio album, on cassette around about 1990. . And to say I wore that tape out, well... I've been having trouble sleeping lately (which is perfectly understandable, considering the current circumstances). And one night, a few weeks back, I was struggling to remain beneath the veil of sleep, drifting in and out in and out of slumber. Meanwhile, the chorus to Making Me Laugh, Euphoria's third track, just kept playing in my mind in an endless repeat. . That's how I'm printed on my psyche this album happens to be, even after 30 years ago and by. . And Making Me Laugh it's just the tip of the iceberg... This record is littered with so many Anthrax classics... Of course there's the title track, State of Euphoria, plus Antisocial, Caught in the Mosh, Be All, End All, Now it's Dark, and Schism, to name a few. . Among the Living was widely regarded as Anthrax's artistic high watermark. And the Persistence of Time is my personal fav of the band's catalog. But State of Euphoria is sneakily one of their best albums. . Which is interesting, considering Anthrax band leader, Scott Ian, claimed in his memoir, I'm the Man, to be disappointed in State of Euphoria. Ian says he and the band we're not truly invested in the album's writing and production. . Well, if a record of this quality is Anthrax not truly invested, it's not tough to see why they put out so many great albums. . Anywhoo, I recently picked the album up on CD.
