Never had Tranduil expected this from his son. Of course they’d had plenty of arguments in their time, but never had one of them come to this. Legolas had struck him. Had what he said really been deserving of such a furious reaction? Briefly, he almost forgot he was holding the prince in place as he considered if, perhaps, it was himself at fault. Then he shook himself slightly and returned his attention to Legolas. Regardless of whether or not he was at fault, it was not acceptable for his son to strike him.

As much as she enjoyed being outdoors, the white witch hated being stuck outside at night. Yes, she had her beloved stars to keep her company, but the woods in which she was traveling did not feel right. Even her horse, who was usually calm, seemed to be at a state of unrest, neighing and stopping every now and then-she was the one who had to urge him on. Finally she spotted someone up ahead and urged the horse to go faster to catch up to them. When she did she smiled at them, though the smile was tired. "Hello there, friend. Would you mind if I joined you in traveling-at least until the next town or by tomorrow morning? It is not wise to travel alone at night."
