Habár Freddie magánéletébe beköszöntött a boldogság, a Queen továbbra is problémákkal küzdött, hiszen még mindig nem sikerült megfelelő basszusgitárost találniuk. Ismét hirdetést adtak fel, melyre egy 17 éves, Doug Bogie nevű srác jelentkezett. „Amatőr zenész voltam, de mindig végigböngésztem a lehetőségeket a heti zenei lapban, a Melody Makerben. 1970 januárjában az egyikben csak annyi állt, hogy „egy mesés új banda basszerost keres”. Az Imperial Collegeban hallgattak meg.” – emlékezett vissza Doug. Következő fellépésükre, február 19-én már az új basszusgitárosukkal érkeztek meg a Hornsey Town Hallba. Teljesen elment a kedvük, amikor megérkeztek és észrevették, hogy közönségük mindössze 6 főből áll.

Február 20-án újabb fellépés következett, ahol a Yes és a Wishbone Ash elő zenekaraként játszottak a Kingston Polytechnicben. Tony Blackman a közönség soraiból, így emlékezett vissza az estére: „Akkoriban senki nem ismerte a Queent, még, döbbenetes módon úgy éreztem, hogy nem rosszabbak a Yesnél vagy a Wishbone Ashnél. Ráadásul kilógtak a sorból. Mindenkin tapadós, vékony, fekete ruha volt. Szándékosan nőiesre vették a figurát, főleg az énekes. Akkoriban ez nem volt szokás, mégis alaposan rájátszottak.”.

A két koncert után Freddie, Brian és Roger úgy érezték, hogy nem Doug a megfelelő ember a számukra, így hát 1971. február 21-én a fiú karrierje véget ért a Queenben. Nem sokkal később Brian és Roger egy londoni diszkóban, találkoztak egy John Deacon nevű basszusgitárossal és nem sokkal később meg is hallgatták őt. Eljátszottak együtt pár számot, majd Brian megtanította neki a „Son and Daughter” dallamát. Egyértelművé vált, hogy a Queen megtalálta utolsó, hiányzó darabkáját.

Even though Freddie was blessed with privacy, the Queen still struggled with finding the right bass guitarist. Another ad was posted, with a 17-year-old guy named Doug Bogie applying. “I was an amateur musician, but I always searched through the possibilities in the weekly music magazine, Melody Maker. In January 1970, one said, "a fabulous new band is looking for a bassist." They auditioned at Imperial College.” - Doug recalled. Everyone was wearing a slim, black dress. The character was deliberately feminine, especially the singer. It was not a custom at the time, but they played well.”.

After the two concerts, Freddie, Brian and Roger felt that Doug wasn't the right person for them, so on February 21, 1971, his career ended with the Queen. Shortly afterwards, Brian and Roger met a bassist named John Deacon in a London disco and were heard shortly afterwards. They played a few songs together, and Brian taught him the melody of "Son and Daughter." It was clear that the Queen had found their last missing piece.
