i’ve had a few messages about theme images displaying incorrectly - either they’re not resizing where they should or they’re appearing blurry. this happens on themes where images have previously displayed fine - and on different themes.
at the moment I don’t know what the cause of this issue is ( tumblr is likely changing something in the background that i’m unaware of right now! ) but if you encounter this issue, i do have a fix that you can use!
direct upload using the theme asset uploader
[ step by step under the cut ]
where you have an image in your theme, it’s very likely your theme maker will have put in a useful bit of code to allow you to upload your images in the basic editor without having to dabble in the code.
e.g.
if you upload here, this might mean your image displays incorrectly. so - somewhere in the theme, there will be a corresponding line of code which will look something like this:
background-image: url('{image:background}');
or this
<img src=“{image:sidebar}”>
just do a search for image:imagename ( where imagename is the name in the basic theme editor, e.g. background, icon, portrait, header, sidebar etc )
in order to do a direct upload for your image, you need to delete the curly brackets and containing text - e.g. {image:background} - making sure to leave the single quotes or double quotations in place.
then leave the cursor between the quote marks and do the following to upload your image.
click on the settings cog at the top of the theme editing page - then click on ‘theme assets’
then in the theme assets pane that pops up, click on ‘add a file’
choose your image and give it a second or two to upload. then, next to the uploaded file, click ‘insert’.
this will put the code for your image between the quotes. and -- that should do it until i can figure out a better fix!
i have not edited a tumblr theme in like a zillion years and i’m clueless over here. haha. i used to be good at coding... it was almost easy for me, and now i’m shit.

edit: IF IT DOESN'T WORK, MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW THE STEPS AGAIN AND REPLACE ALL INSTANCES OF HTTP*S* _before_ REPLACING ALL INSTANCES OF HTTP. IT HAS TO BE IN...
If anyone is having trouble changing their theme here is a link to a great video by @sporedrives!
