Thelonious Monk – Criss-CrossÂ
Criss-Crossis a studio album by American jazz musician Thelonious Monk, released in August 1963 by Columbia Records. The album consists of previously released Monk compositions that were re-recorded for Columbia by the Thelonious Monk Quartet.
Personnel: Thelonious Monk – piano Charlie Rouse – tenor saxophone John Ore – bass Frankie Dunlop – drums
Critical reception
AllMusic review by Lindsay Planer awarded the album 4 stars and stated:” Criss-Cross - Thelonious Monk's second album for Columbia Records - features some of the finest work that Monk ever did in the studio with his '60s trio and quartet. Whether revisiting pop standards or reinventing Monk's own classic compositions, Monk and Charlie Rouse, John Ore, and Frankie Dunlop exchange powerful musical ideas, as well as provide potent solos throughout the disc.
… This is prime Monk for any degree of listener.”
“Monk’s first record for Columbia could be accused of being a safe bet since it features a selection of classic Monk tunes instead of new material. However, don’t dismiss it too quickly. On the original recordings of these songs, the pianist played as if he was chiseling the tunes out of marble, and part of the fun was listening to what seemed very much like composition in progress. These recordings, on the other hand, sound more like finished sculptures or polished works of art. … An excellent fresh start.” - David Rickert/AllAboutJazz.
