I don't have any Halloween albums from 1967 and decided to go for Boogaloo instead - just because it's great dance music. A short lived boom from 66-69 (roughly) mixing latin with r&b and soul that even got the former surf band The Lively Ones off their boards to shake their hips dancing on the street. Les McCann couldn't resist neither and recorded his "Bucket O'Grease" including a great boogalized version of "Bang Bang". The rest is the real deal from genre finding labels like Fania, Cotique and others. It now being June, I can finally talk people’s ears off about surf music and have it at least be seasonally appropriate. I’ll probably be posting about instro surf a lot on this account. Actually, I’ll probably just post dumb sad shit for a week and then delete it. Whatevs.
At any rate, surf music brings me joy immeasurable. It’s the sound of electricity. Of getting really stoked to go hang out with your friends on a Friday night. The sound of new possibilities.
So yeah. Pick up pretty much any surf record and you can’t go wrong. My personal recommendation would be to start with Surf Age Nuggets on Rockbeat Records. But ask the good Lord for guidance and you’ll be steered in the right direction.
