Refuse : Refuge : Re-fuse (a night of poetry and performance)
Joseph Minden and Johnny Costi curated an evening of readings in the name of the current exhibition, Refuse : Refuge : Re-Fuse.
Featuring sets, experiments and exclamations from the sensational Vahni Capildeo in partnership with the magnificent Jeremy Hardingham, the unstoppable Brother Portrait, the spectacular Will Harris, the superlative Aleksandra Bilic, the gobsmacking Johnny Costi and the resident Joseph Minden.
Will Harris was born in London, of mixed Anglo-Indonesian heritage, and studied at the universities of Oxford and St Andrews. He has since worked in schools and as a tutor, co-edits 13 Pages and organises The Poetry Inquisition: a night of poetry held to account. He is a fellow of the Complete Works III.
Brother Portrait is a first generation in this land. He is a Sierra Leonean Black British writer/rhymer and one third of 'Black/Other' collective. Portrait's interests lie in the importance of cultural production for understanding expression and sense of self.
Johnny Costi was born in London of mixed Cypriot and Irish heritage and is a Performance Artist employing poetry as one of his modes of communication. Central Saint Martin's graduate Costi was schooled in Hip Hop and Grime from a young age and has run Spoken Word events in London since 2010. He has shown internationally and in institutions such as the Tate Modern, ICA and MK Gallery.
Vahni Capildeo has published numerous collections. Her most recent, Measures of Expatriation, was published by Carcanet in 2016 and has been shortlisted for both the TS Eliot and Forward Prizes. http://www.carcanet.co.uk/cgi-bin/indexer?owner_id=1167
Jeremy Hardingham is Manager of the Judith E. Wilson Studio in the Faculty of English basement, University of Cambridge. In this he facilitates, administrates, curates, collaborates & participates in events and research across a range of live & recorded performance practices. The writing and performance work is philosophically curious about the material and abstract relations of language to bodies in spaces and places.
Aleksandra Bilic is from Sarajevo. She has an MA in Creative Writing for Performance from Goldsmiths . Her work has been performed at Edinburgh Festival, Soho Theatre, Southwark Playhouse and was selected for the Royal Court Young Writers programme. After a 5 year hiatus working in documentary production around the world she is embracing her love of words once again especially for this event.
Joseph Minden's poems have appeared in journals including PN Review and The Manchester Review. He was part of the team behind The Polar Muse, a project commissioning poems for The Polar Museum in Cambridge.
