There are guns designed specifically for self-defense and hunting and sports. 

Also, you care more about what you think guns are designed for than what they’re used for. Which is, mostly, not hurting people. Ever. Most guns used in crime are illegally owned, and they’re the minority.

You’ve never had to defend yourself or lived in a rural area in your entire life, have you?

Pepper spray can often be ineffective, and isn’t a good idea in close quarters, because it tends to get in the defender’s eyes too. If you have more than one attacker, you’re in trouble. If you are up against an animal that you can’t hit with the spray, you’re in trouble.

Bullets move at above the speed of sound, BTW.

Not to mention how dosage matters. There’s a reason there’s pepper spray specifically for bears.

Self-defense classes are trumped, very easily, by someone with a weight, height, and/or muscle advantage. Or, in other words, the average violent criminal (who is a young man) facing most women.

Also, places that restrict guns heavily also tend to restrict tools like pepper spray, and people’s self-defense rights. I live in the UK, BTW.
