Always had a great level of respect for Dwyane Wade, but he's out of pocket with this classist, bootstrappy statement. Some of his fans in Miami-Dade County are hourly wage workers. Bet he want thinking about that when he tweeted this. Minimum wage workers are the backbone of this society, the hardest working group and the least paid. If the myth of working hard actually meant something in the country, they'd be running the country lock, stock, and barrel (Kwame Ture voice). Not only do they work to survive, but they frontline to improve the workplace across all sectors, not only for themselves. So for celebs like him and those who rush to defend this statement, put some goddam respect on the working class. Williamsburg, May 2018 Adjusting My Glasses. Dick Gregory taught me the 3 most important rules of living with the eyeglasses of awareness. 1. Once you have them on, you can't take them off. 2. You can't force anyone else to wear them. 3. You must have patience and compassion for those who have never put on the glasses, or even heard that such a pair of glasses exist. Learning how to come to terms with the world around you and your place in it is a continuing process. You don't ever completely arrive at awareness (I prefer that over "woke"). It's a journey that lasts beyond the physical vessel that is our bodies. Bushwick, Brooklyn, April 2018. Everybody wants to be original. I'm trying to stay original. The challenge isn't accomodating change, but it's remaining who you are at its purest element in the face of constant adversity & uncertainty while you evolve into a better human. I guess gentrified Bushwick is the perfect backdrop for these photos. Not the Bushwick I used to know, but on this particular block, the backdrop blends in as a remnant of a bygone era, an era from which the foundation of who I am today was laid. I'm not the man I was before, despite efforts from many to navigate me from away from what I know, but my soul is in tact and I can look at myself in the mirror and be proud at what reflects back. How much are you willing to fight to keep your soul intact? How far are you willing to go to protect what you've spent years building up? Growing up being an avid reader and history nerd with an active imagination, I've been fortunate to find heroes who I could identify with in both fiction and non-fiction narratives of my people.
