He had been hoping that, out of all the questions he could have asked, that wouldn’t have been one of them.

The thought of answering it was a daunting enough prospect as it was, without the possible repercussions of his response. Would Jamie understand? Would it make sense to him? Or would he simply dismiss it as little more than arrant nonsense, as his musically-gifted predecessor so often liked to say?

He supposed that, either way, it would be justified. After all, Jamie had been forced to return to his native time and place by the Time Lords, without so much as an adequate moment to say goodbye properly to the man that had shown him so many far-flung corners of what had initially been a realm that was unknown to him - the universe - along with the wonders and terrors that existed within it. Not only that, but many, many centuries had passed on The Doctor’s part - more than enough time to set about finding the young Highlander and inviting him aboard the old girl once again - and yet, it had only taken him until now, three regenerations down the line, to achieve it.

Still, Jamie deserved an explanation, however ugly it would prove to be.

“The Time Lords - they told me that they’d wiped all but your very first memories of me. They made me believe that any attempt to travel to Scotland would have been pointless. I had no idea that they had fabricated it - I only discovered the truth for myself very recently, at which point I made it a priority of mine to find my way back to you...”

A heavy, guilt-ridden sigh left his lips.

WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERFECTLY INNOCENT QUESTION TO ANYONE ELSE SUCCEEDED IN PLUNGING AN EMOTIONAL BLADE INTO BOTH HIS HEARTS. It’d been the one thing he had truly been afraid of; the one event that not even he possessed the immediate capabilities to deal with.

THE YOUNG SCOT HAD ONLY SUFFERED A CONCUSSION AS A RESULT OF A BRAWL SPIRALLING OUT OF CONTROL, BUT AS SIMPLE AS THE CIRCUMSTANCES WERE, THEY ECHOED A VERY GENUINE FEAR FOR THE TIME LORD. After all, renegades had always been viewed in a very intolerable light by those who ruled Gallifrey; no doubt that when they eventually managed to catch up with him - and The Doctor understood that it was indeed a matter of when, not if - Jamie would almost certainly be the main focus of their attention. Inflicting any sort of sentence on The Doctor himself was one thing - forcibly separating his him from the very boy that had grown to become a son to him, and performing goodness-knows-what alterations to his mind was quite another. The very notion of being little else than a stranger to Jamie was one that he could scarcely think about.

“Jamie? Why, it’s me! The Doctor! Don’t you remember?”

HE TRIED TO MAINTAIN AN AMICABLE TONE TO HIS VOICE, BUT EVEN HE COULD SENSE THAT THE VEIL WAS THIN. Surpressing his true emotions, he kept a firm hold on his companion as he hauled him to his feet with a groan.

“Just a case of amnesia, eh? That brute has really gone and done it, hasn’t he?”

For the most part! He’s a big softie and wears both his hearts on his sleeve, so witnessing two people genuinely love each other makes him so happy. He sees nothing wrong in holding hands, cuddling and even the odd smooch here and there.

“Feeling a little left out, Jamie? Come along-”

And with that, he pulled the Highlander into a firm, loving hug, gently patting his back in the process.

After their reunion, one of the many, MANY adventures that Jamie and Five embarked on involved attending a fancy dress party.

While Five dug out the same Harlequin outfit he’d worn during a similar gathering in 1920s England. he was shocked to discover that Jamie had opted for a pair of grey checked trousers, a baby blue shirt, a broken bow-tie, a tattered, oversized black jacket, and - perhaps most damning of all - a VERY familiar-looking recorder.

“Jamie? You were fooling around on those rocks again, weren’t you?”

He had questioned his young companion not because of any uncertainty - on the contrary; he’d known exactly what he had been up to the moment he’d hobbled into the TARDIS, a noticeable cut present on his right knee. Rather, his words had been structured in such a way in order to give the Highlander an opportunity to admit his errors for himself.

After all, when the TARDIS had materialised in Dover of all places, Jamie had been warned against being so reckless near a cliff edge on more than once occasion, and the uneven terrain had been the least of the Time Lord’s worries. Jamie, on his part, appeared to think he’d know better, and had swiftly carried on regardless.

Now he had ended up injured, no doubt dragging himself back to the vessel with his metaphorical tail between his legs. The Doctor sighed.

“Suppose you’ll be needing a plaster for that, hm? Silly oaf. Go on, get yourself sat down. I’ll only be a minute.”
