The dance
As an artist, my greatest joy is bringing the vibrant energy of my community to life, and this piece, "The Hunt," is one of my favorites. It's not about tracking an animal, but about the lively, infectious celebration and dance that follows a successful hunt or harvest—a moment of pure, collective joy.
I chose to depict five women dancing together under a spreading, stylized tree. The tree itself is a crucial element, with its delicate leaves and simple, strong branches—it symbolizes the life and shelter of the forest. The background is a soft, muted grey, which really makes the rich, traditional colors of the dancers pop!
Notice the vibrant clothing—deep reds, emerald greens, and the striking white dhotis worn by the two women on the ends. They are playing drums (the dhol), while the central figure, in the most striking red, holds the cymbals (manjira). I love the dynamic poses: their arms are lifted, their bodies sway, creating a beautiful rhythm that moves across the canvas.
I've framed the scene with a traditional decorative border, a pattern I often use, inspired by the motifs found in our local folk art. It grounds the scene and gives it that authentic, classic look.
This painting, done in the folk style, is a testament to the powerful, rhythmic spirit of our village celebrations. Every brushstroke is a drumbeat!
The Apple TV show was due out December 3.
