Mariner 9 Orbits Mars - November 13, 1971 As the ninth probe of NASA’s Mars program, Mariner 9 was destined to be a footnote in history. Mariner 8 was meant to achieve the grandiose honor of being the first artificial satellite to orbit Mars, while Mariner 9 was designed to arrive second, almost as a support craft to its sister probe’s mapping mission. But when Mariner 8 crash-landed in the Atlantic shortly after a launch failure, Mariner 9 was on the verge of greatness. After a successful launch in late May, the spacecraft completed its 167-day journey and entered the orbit of Mars on November 13, 1971.
