I've just finished reading The End of Night by Paul Bogard and found some parts of it really pertinent, and honestly, quite affective to my emotions. When I stop and think about the sky, I get overwhelmed and slightly vertiginous. Literally just now, my lightbulb died due to a blackout and only my candle flames remained - there was such a sudden drop in light and yet the flames themselves gave off so much light that it was like, oh what just happened? It's opened me up into understanding how my body is affected by the amount of light I take in - not the good vitamin D light.

As a house we ended up sitting around together (about 13 of us tonight) with a guitar and the fire on, and even though the lights came back on shortly after, we stayed around as it was nice and comforting. There's something truly inherent and instinctual in us to enjoy flames and the absence of light - we've only been susceptible to artifical light in the last 136 and so of course haven't been able to evolve to behave in a way where natural light wasn't of survival necessity. So, sitting around the fire, it felt natural and homely.
