âFanny! Fanny, Iâm home!â Giac called as he entered their flat. It had been a long day at the firm. Giacâs clients were always eager to meet wih him so he could help decide what job they should take. That was a perk of loving a range of art to science, he knew all the fields.
He lived in London, rather reluctantly, but with his beautiful wife Fanny, he would live anywhere.
He stood facing the small mirror near the front door was began removing his coat when he heard the small click of a door being shut.
Fanny rounded the corner of the flat and gave a harsh, âShhh! We have to be quiet.â She whispered.
Giac turned around from where he placed his keys. She sort of looked a sight. Half of her hair was matted, she had a rag drapped over her shoulder but still some stain of a milky substance on the collar of her blue t-shirt. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes looked a bit droopy- but she was still the most beautiful woman in the world to him.
Well, in tie with one other.
âWhy are you whispering?â Giac asked, walking up to her.
âWhy else? Ivieâs finally gone down.â
âBut isnât she in her nursery, with the door closed?â
âShe has your ears, Giac,â Fanny grumbled, âshe can hear a mile away.â
âHmm.â Just he was about speak again, they heard the indistinguishable call of their 20 month year old.
âNooo.â Fanny whined and layed her head against his chest.
He kissed the top of her head and hugged her tightly. âIâll take care of it. Why donât you go have a bath?â
âCause I look like a wreck?â She looked up at him.
He kissed her lips, âNever! But I know how much your bath bombs soothe you. Why not try the lavander one I bought you?â
Fanny smiled, âOkay. Call if you need me.â She stood on her tiptoes and pecked his lips again before sauntering into the bathroom for a well deserved bath.
-
Giac entered the nursery to find Genevieve standing in her crib. Her little hands wrapped around the safety bars and her bottom lip wobbling.
âWhatâs this now, whatâs this now, eh?â he asked as he picked her up. Hugging her tight and nuzzling her cheek. âWere you difficult for Mommy? Whatâs wrong Ivie?â
She merely wiggled and squirmed in his arms in an attempt to be put down.
âNo no, love. Itâs bedtime. Itâs sleepytime.â
âNo sleepytime.â Genevieve mumbled.
Giac held her tighter and rocked his torso from side to side. Humming softly.
Her little ear was pressed against his chest and her thumb soon went into her mouth. Her body stopped wriggling after about 15 minutes and she finally slumped in his arms.
Giac looked down to see not a pair of light brown watery eyes, but a bundle of messy blonde curly locks that stopped just below her ears and curled around her cheek. He swallowed a lump in his throat. His little girl was so beautiful, just like her mother.
He gently laid her down in her crib and continued to run his fingers through her hair.
The door gently slid open and Fanny came up behind him. She wrapped her arms around his waist and nuzzled her nose into his neck.
âThanks.â She whispered.
âOf course,â he murmured. âYou know, you could call if sheâs being too difficult.â
Fanny shrugged, âI thought I could handle her.â
Giac turned to her and wrapped her in a hug. âYou can. Youâre a brilliant mother. Remember, sheâs still teething and learning to talk. Sheâs probably just as frustrated.â
Fanny raised an eyebrow at him.
âOkay, maybe not as frustrated.â
She smirked and hugged him again.
âYâknow, any bad days aside. I canât imagine our lives without her.â
Giac tilted her face in his hands and kissed her deeply. âMe neither, Fanny.â After a moment, he asked, âWant to make another?âÂ
She thwarted him on the chest with a chuckle.Â
They walked out of the nursery hand in hand. They gently shut the door and heplaced a kiss atop of her head and caught a whiff of Fannyâs hair scent.
âHey, did you not use the bath bomb?â
âActually,â she drawled out, smirking up af him, âI was hoping weâd use it together.â

Casanova x Fanny :P âI never stood a chance, did I?â
Angst ahoy! Not sorry ;)
She stood behind him as he adjusted his tie.
It was so very modern of him to ask her to be his best woman.
But that was Giac, ever so modern.
And funny, sweet, loving and beautiful.
Fanny bit her lip as she reminiscend about their relationship.
They lived down the streets as children. Giac was adopted, it was rumoured that Giacâs mother became an opera star. It didnât make him feel any better though and growing up, he surrounded himself with projects to distract from the pain. Music, art and science. Even law.
In school, he was the star, and was admired by Fannyâbut not for his popularity. But rather for his able to fabricate. She knew the other side of him, and she was fascinated at how he was able to conceal his true self.
She was a bit more shy, she had focused her attetion on literature and only saw Giac when they walked home together.
Four years they spent in school and each day they walked back. Occasionally hand in hand and talking about their days, but they always remained close friends.
Years went by and nothing ever escalated between them. Fanny was always intimidated by the numerous women (and sometimes men) they came into Giacâs life. Even though they were usually one night stands, aside from Bellinoâ they were never really serious.
Until Giac met her.
Henriette. With dark hair, full eyes and olive skin.
From the first time Fanny saw her, she knew something was different. Giac had a certain look in his eye that Fanny had never seen. And it slightly saddened her, even to this day. She could swear she had seen him look at her like that. But perhaps it was merely her besotted imagination.
Snapping out her thoughts, she saw Giac standing in front of her with a quizzical look on his face.
âYou okay, Fanny?â
âHmm? Oh, yes.â
âYou seemed lost in thought for a moment. Whatâs going on in that gorgeous head of yours?â
Oh, how his flatteries hurt now more than ever.
âItâs justâŚ.have you everâŚ.how come weâŚ.whyâŚâ
âFanny?â
âWhy her, Giac?â She looked up at him with tears in her eyes.
He looked startled. âFanny?ââ
âI meanâŚIâm so sorry. I am so happy that youâve found love but I guess I just donât understand.â
âDonât understand what? Fanny, please. Youâre scaring me.â He grasped her shoulders.
âIs there a reason thatâŚ.weâŚ.that we neverâŚ.â
âOhâŚFanny.â Giacâs eyes grew morose. âIâŚI donât know what to say.â
âI never stood a chanceâŚDid I?â
âMio dio! Fanny! Please. I didnât even knowâŚUgh, you tell me this now?!â He released her shoulders and stood at the other end of the room. Placing his palms against his desk and groaning.
Fanny started crying then. He had never raised his voice at her, but she was more upset because she felt she deserved it.
âGiac, Iâm sorry. I donât know whatâs wrong with me. I justâŚ.â
âDo you really want to know why, Fanny?â
âIââ
âItâs because I thought you werenât interested.â
âWhat?!â
âYou never showed an interest, Fanny! I always tried to woo you with words and make you laugh and smile but you never..once looked my wayâŚ.and then things got complicated.â
âYou mean you got popular and gained the attention of every girl in the school.â
âThatâs not fair! I couldnât help it if girls took an interest in me. And besides, what would you care? Whenever I was with someone you were a lot more distant.â
âAnd why do you suppose that is, Giac?â Fanny asked incredously.
âCHRIST!â Giac bellowed making Fanny jump. All fight left both of them, leaving nothing but somber feeling.
âGiacâŚI want you to be happy. Above all else, thatâs all I want.â
âThen why tell me this now, Fanny? Why now?â He asked miserably.
Because Iâm a fool. She thought. Because I love you, and I am a fool. âBecauseâŚthis may be my last chance, isnât it?â
âFannyâŚPlease. Youâre my best woman in my wedding. IâŚcanât think of this now.â Giac shook his head, and Fanny was shocked to see tears on his cheeks. âWhat Iâm about to say my change everything. But I feel it needs to.â He took a deep breath and gently reached for her hands. âFanny Price. I love you. Ever since we were kids. Youâve always known the real me. Even more than Henriette in some ways. No one could ever have what we do. Part of me always has loved you, truly, and always will.â
Fannyâs lip wobbled as more tears trailed down her cheeks. âP-part of you?â
âFannyâŚI need to think,â he reached a trembling hand up to her cheek. âBut right now, Henreitte and her entire family are waiting for me for this damn dinner. SoâŚI need to go.â
âGiacââ
âIâll tell them youâre unwell and you couldnât make it.â
âLike the family would even concern themselves about me.â She grumbled.
âFannyâŚâ
âDo what you need to, GiacâŚYouâllâŚ.youâll call me?â She asked as he reached the door. His shoulders still shaking.
âYeah.â He replied after a few moments. âYeah, Iâll call you.â
As Fanny watched him leave the room, all her built up anguish came pouring out. Her hands shook and her knees buckled and she collapsed into a ball on the floor. Sobbing loudly into her hands.
Unbeknownst to her, Giacomo was just on the other side of the door. Hearing her sobs and barely containing his own.
Clara blinked her eyes open against her blaring alarm clock. It took her a few moments to realize she wasnât in the TARDIS. After a particularly dangerous adventure on the planet Nagheis, Clara was struck with a want to return home for a while much to The Doctorâs dismay. Speaking of which, Clara wondered just where she was. With a groan and a stretch, Clara reluctantly rolled out of bed to go make a cup of tea.
She nearly screamed at the sight of a short haired blonde drooling all over the pillow of her couch.
Once her heart rate calmed down, Clara found herself watching her dear Doctor. So much had changed over the years. In theory, Clara had been with all incarnations. However it was this and the last three that really struck a chord with her. Clara had yet to full admit it and say it aloud, but she adored her Doctor. Quite a bit, and this regeneration was no different. In fact, she prefered this one a bit more.
With a grin, Clara strolled over to The Doctor, still dressed in clothes covered in ash from Nagheis and gently brushed some hair away from her face. Instantly The Doctorâs eyes opened.
With a moan, The TimeLady looked over at her tiny brunette companion.
âBlimey, how long was I out?â
âArenât you the Lord of Time here?â
âOh right!â The Doctor claimed.
With a fond shake of her head, Clara smiled. âDoctor, what are you doing here?â
âWell,â She said stretching and standing up now hovering nearly a foot over Clara, âI wanted to keep an eye on you. Iâm sorry about yesterday. Truly, so sorry.â
âDoctor, itâs okay. Iâve been through worse.â The Doctor flinched and Clara winced, âNo I meanâŚ.I can handle it. I want to! I justâŚwanted a night back here I suppose.â
âRight, of course. Well, where do you want to go today?â
Clara raised her eyebrows in response.
âI meanââ The Doctor exclaimed, âif youâre up for it.â
âMaybe after a cuppa and shower.â
The Doctor nodded, âOh yeah, sure!â
Clara smirked and turned to the kitchen. âYou may want to conside washing up too.â
âWhy?â
âDoctor youâre covered in ash. In fact if youâve stained my sofa, youâre buying me a new one.â
The Doctor grinned sheepishly as Clara walked away. She struggled to come to terms with it, but The Doctor could honestly say that she was so happy with Clara. More happy than sheâs been in a long time. She adored how much smaller Clara was and how even now they still had their usual banter. She was so afraid that after all she put Clara through, this, the biggest change would be the final straw for her.
The Doctor nearly cried tears of joy when Clars promised to stay.
The Doctor sauntered back into the TARDIS for a quick change and brush of the hair when a thought struck her. It had been so long since her and Clara had one of their lazier and calmer days. Perhaps thatâs why Clara needed to sleep here, maybe she was growing anxious.
With a shake of determination, The Doctor pranced right back into Claraâs flat and found her sitting at her table with a mug in her hand.
âI know what weâre doing today!â The Doctor cheered.
Clara took a sip, âYou do?â
âYes!â
âDoes it involve explosions?â
âNo.â
âBeing chased by the Nags?â
âIsnât that still a funny name? But no.â
âDo I have a choice?â
âOf course not!â
Clara couldnât help but laugh. âAll right then, Doctor.â Clara stood and walked over, âLead the way.â
With a beaming grin, The Doctor replied, âBrilliant.â
*
âIs the blindfold really neccessary, Doctor?â
âWhy, you donât like it?â
âOh no, not at all. Top level kink.â Clara clicked her tongue.
The Doctor laughed, âWell, this is part of the surprise!â
With a hand on Claraâs shoulder, The Doctor guided her out the TARDIS doors.
âYou ready?â The Doctor asked.
Clara nodded and with idle hands removed the blindfold.
Clara was met with a wide green field filled with daisies and dendelions. Far to the left was a beautiful looking tide pool with a clear and steady waterfall. Above them was the clearest and most heavenly blue sky Clara had ever seen, and the sunshine that reigned down seemed to make the world gold.
âWhat is this place?â
The Doctor shrugged. âParadise.â
Clara looked at her, âParadise?â
âYep. I just thoughtâŚ.maybe after our last few extrenous adventures we could do with a calmer day.â
âDoctorâŚâ Clara smiled and reached down to intertwine their fingers. âThatâs really sweet. Thank you. I love it.â
The Doctor smiled back and tightened her grip on Claraâs fingers.
âRace to the tide pool!â The Doctor took off not immediately realizing their hands were still locked and tumbling Clara along side her.
Clara laughed loudly and yelled, âThought you said no running!â
âAh, but whereâs the fun in that?!â
And despite hours in this land, exploring endless hills and valleys and even attempting to count every flower, the sunshine never left the sky or either of their hearts.
She rests at the foot of the bed. Sheet covering her bare bum but the lamp to the rest of the bed paints her freckled back in gold and Hardy is grateful her auburn hair is in a high bun. He rests against their headboard with a pillow propped behind his back and canât stop staring at her. This gorgeous, quirky and sweet woman who appeared in his life as if out of nowhere. There are days he just canât believe it.Â
âHolly,â he murmurs and rests his palm on the back of her calf.Â
She looks over her shoulder with a grin.Â
âCome here.âÂ
She pouts, It canât wait? Iâm almost to the big proposal.â She waves her worn out copy of Pride and Prejudice.
He chuckles, running his hand along her skin, âYou know the words by heart.âÂ
She smirks, âSo?â
âIt doesnât bore you?â
âNever.â She shakes her head.
He ducks his head down, âJust like life here eh? Being here with me, in this stupid town, doesnât bore you either?âÂ
This time she turns fully around, sheet falling off of her and Hardy feels his tongue swell at the sight of her bare body. Cheeky minx.
With a tilt of her head she slowly crawls up until her face is inches away from his. âNever.â She whispers. âBeing here. With you. Iâm quite happy.â She smiles and he leans in to kiss her.Â
He pulls back with a sigh. âWell, thatâs a relief.â
She places a hand on his cheek, âNever doubt this, Alec Hardy. I love youâŚmost ardently.â She laughs and he rolls his eyes. With a quick shift she finds herself entangled with him amongst the sheets and giggles as he devours the skin of her neck. After a few moments he pulled back. âI love you too.âÂ
âWell, thatâs a relief.â She whispered and pulled his head back to hers.
hmmmmmm can i get some fanny feeding a blindfolded giac bits of fruit all romantic like? :)
Enjoy my friend :)
âFanny, what on earth?â He asked as she began to tie a cloth around his eyes. He batted her hands away gently.
They were seated in their drawing room, the walls illuminated by the yellow dusk sky.Â
âCome on Giac, please?â Her brown doe eyes peered into his.Â
âBut blindfolds are only fun when I get to do it to you.â He grumbled.
âPlease?â She pouted and his resolve crumbled.
âOh, all right then.â He sighed dramatically and thatâs when she knew he wasnât as reluctant as he was acting.
âIâll make it worth your while, I promise.â She added with a wink.
He smirked and she giggled as she wrapped a blindfold around his eyes.
âCan you see anything?â
âNo.â
âAre you lying?â
âA bit.â
She giggled and tightened the strap around his eyes.
âI promise, this will be fun.â
âReally?â
âYes, now open up.â
âOpen up? What are you putting me in my mouth.â He smirked.
âOh, youâll see.â She replied sultry and he laughed giddily.
It was cut off with a choking sound as he swallowed the berry she had placed on his tongue.
âCazzo!â He exclaimed between chews, âGive a bloke a warning would youâooh.â He smacked his lips together, âThat was delightful. What is that?â
âYou tell me, Giacomo!â She giggled, âHence the blindfold.â
âOhhh. All right then, ehmâŚ.Letâs see. Definitely wasnât a grape. Or aâŚ.blueberryâŚUmâŚ.Cherry?â
He heard Fanny giggle, âCorrect! Okay, ready?â
He nodded, and after a few moments he felt something sweet, plump and squishy on his lips. âOh! Strawberry! I know that fruit, and I know you do too.â He grinned and wiggled his eyebrows. Remembering one particular night with Fanny involving ice, silk and strawberries.Â
Fanny was grateful he couldnât see how red her cheeks became. âYes, wellâŚYou got that one too! Ready for more, Giacomo?â
He nodded eagerly and she smiled as she rooted through the small bowl of fruits she had between them.
After a variety of more fruits, Giac grew a bit relentless.
âAs much fun as Iâm having mia bella,â Giac slid closer to her and angled his face to where he assumed hers was, âWhen can I taste you?âÂ
His warm berry breath puffed against her cheek and she lost all resolve. She turned her head and kissed him ravenously. He reached behind his head as his tongue danced with hers and pulled off his blindfold.
âI do believe,â he blinked his eyes and rested his head against hers panting slightly, âyou said this would be worth my while?â
âHas it not been so far?â She asked sweetly and he tickled her sides.
âYou know it has,â he took her in his arms and layed her gently on the floor. Hovering over her he brushed away her blonde curls from her face.
âIâm glad. IâŚI want to please you, Giacomo. I hope that was fun.â
His heart swelled and he smiled down softly at her, âIt was. I love playing games with you, migliore amica.âÂ
She beamed at him, knowing that he just called her his best friend and lifted her head for a peck. He snuck his arms beneath her and hugged her to him. He felt her wrap her arms around his neck and he hummed appreciatively. He pulled away from her lips and kissed down her jaw and neck to the expanse of her chest.
Already overwhelmed by the sight of his head against her chest and his lips licking a trail she slid her hands into his hair and tugged gently, wanting his lips against her once more. He smiled at her and bent down to taste her.
âNow, can it be my turn to blindfold you now?â He grumbled against her lips.
âWell, since you asked so politely.â She laughed and while he worked the skin of her neck and collarbone, she reached a hand behind them for the blessed cloth.

Fanny helplessly groaned into pillow which was damp from her tears. Her montly bleed was always agony. On some days, the pain in her stomach would be far too much to even move. However being on bedrest only upset her more. Not being able to walk, or dance, or even go to the bathroom without writhing in agony.
But most of all she hated the restrain it put on her and Giacomo. For a week every month, she would be in too much pain and discomfort to make love with him and she couldnât help but feel awfully guilty.
It never helped that he was an utter saint during those times.
Fanny closed her eyes and groaned again. Rolled onto her stomach and clutching it tightly, she almost hoped Giac wouldnât see her like this.
âFanny! Love are you here?â
She curled further into the pillow and was startled by a hand on her back, which was already aching.
âFanny.â His voice lowered and grew concerned and his hand rubbed circuits along her lower back and she couldnât stop herself from moaning lowly. Still muffled into her pillow.
âFanny, darling. Please whatâs wrong? Show me your face, love. Please.â
How could she resist. With a grimace, she turned her face to him. He frowned and gently wiped away her tear streaks along her cheek. His eyes roamed over her body. He was about to ask what was troubling her when it hit himâit had been about a month after all.
âOh, oh sweetheart. Donât cry. Come here.â He laid down in the bed next to her and enveloped her in his arms.
âIâm sorry.â She managed to breathe out. âI know how dreadful it must be to lay about with me.â
âDreadful?â He scoffed. âIâll have you know, being in bed with you is my favorite thing in this world. No matter what weâre doing.â He added with a wink.
She giggled but it quickly turned into a gasp of pain and she rolled more on her side, towards him. He peppered kisses across her head and ran his hand through her hair.
âWhat can I do, Fanny? How can I ease your pain?â
She shook her head. âI donât think you can do anything love. AndâŚthis time I feel exceptionally worse.â She peered up at him with wet eyes. âI may be confined to bed for a few more daysâŚI understand if you wish to leave.â
Giac simply smiled down at her and shook his head. He bent down and kissed her cheek, eyebrows, the tip of her nose and finally her lips. âNothing could ever drive me away from you, Fanny. Iâll be by your side until you feel better, or tell me to leave.â
She snuggled closer to his chest. âI wonât.â She kissed his chest and he stroked her hair again.
âAlright, darling. What would like to do? Take a nap? Talk? Do you need some food or water? Shall I massage you? Can I read to you or sing?â
She giggled again, and once again met his eyes. âWill you tell me a story?â
âYes love, of course. What would you like to hear?â
âSomething whimisical.â She sighed.
âAs my lady wishes.â
He laid fully on the bed with her and urged her to lay with her head on his chest like she loved. He resumed stroking her hair and told her tales of far away lands, magical beings and a love so fierce that it overcame all obstacles. Fanny loved every moment of it, forgetting the dull ache on her lower belly. Captivated by his soothing voice, she closed her eyes and the scenes he described soon came to life in her dreams.
When she awoke a few hours later, she expected to find cold sheets. Instead she discovered she was still in his arms. On their sides with his palm rubbing soothing circles on her lower belly. With a soft smile she snuggled back into him and felt his lips gently at her neck.
âThank you, Giacomo.â
âOnly the best for you. Sleep now, Iâll be here when you wake.â
Betty stood in the kitchen, hand trembling and breath shuddering as she prepared two cups. She swallowed a lump the size of the sugar she put in her cup of tea, the other left black, the way he likes it.
She had no idea where any of his kitchenware were and had to search around, she was unfamiliar with his apartment, and yet here she stood crying as she prepared his tea.
It had been a harrowing day.
News spread quickly, such a gruesome death as the one that occurred was bound to be known quite abruptly.
Betty pulled the sleeves of her cardigan down further and brought the two cups to his office. She tapped the door lightly with her foot.
âCome in.â He said.
Betty entered his office, the faint smell of tobacco and scotch roamed the air, she cringed a bit but swallowed it down as she set his cup on his desk.
He stood with his back to her, staring out the window. Tall, and handsome. His lean figure was hidden by his thick wool jumper that Betty wished to curl against. She shoved that thought away, she barely knew him for heavenâs sake!
âI didnât know how you take your tea, so I left it black. If you want me to fix it Iââ
âBlack is fine.â
Betty bit her lip, unsure of what to say. She looked around the room fidgeting, wishing she had the right words.
He turned to her, eyes rimmed red and brown curly hair disheveled. He blinked a his cup, and then hers next to it.
âWill you be joining me then?
Betty furrowed her brow, âI can leave if you want. I shouldnât have just assumed.â
âNo,â he shook his head and sat heavily in his chair. âPlease join me.â He sighed.
Betty sad, and reached for her cup. They sat in silence, it lingering in the air. Making the apartment feel even colder than it already was.
Betty set her cup down âSir Iââ
âCall me Jean-François, please.â
She looked him in the eye, meeting his solemn gaze. âIâm so sorry.â
Betty was his neighbor, she moved into the apartment complex after she got a job a seamstress for a nearby store. She had met Mercier while she was moving in.
He greeted her with a kiss on her hand, and ever since that day Betty could still feel his lips on her skin.
She was infatuated.
Yet from afar.
Due to his tedious enigmatic work, she rarely saw him. She knew little of his work. She knew it was at the Embassy, and it required frequent traveling, very late night returns, and was rather dangerous.
However each time they miraculously did see one another, he always greeted her the same:
âGood evening mon ĂŠtoileâ heâd say with a weary smile, and then heâd disappear to his flat. It always left Betty floating, she had no idea what an ĂŠtoile was but it made her feel special. A feeling she was unfamiliar with.
Which each familiar greeting Betty soon gathered information about the enigmatic Jean-François Mercier. Another tenant in the complex, Mr. Fawcett told Betty all that he knew about Mercier. Widowed, French, and possibly dangerous.
Betty refused to believe that last one.
She later learned that even though he was rarely at the apartment, he had a maid. Betty never forgot the day she heard noises from his apartment when she knew he was away. She brought a frying pan and pressed her palm to the unlocked door. Neck drenched in sweat and breathing heavily, she was so on guard she very nearly bashed poor Wladaâs head in.
Wlada. His maid.
A short plump middle aged woman, with a warm smile despite her missing front tooth. Betty shrieked so loud when Wlada came out, she dropped the pan on her foot. Wlada patched her up.
While she did so, Wlada explained that she had been his maid going on 15 years.
âHe took me in after my husband beat and left me.â Wlada shuddered, her thick Polish accent almost incomprehensible. But Betty saw tears glisten the poor womanâs eyes and Betty rubbed her shoulder comfortingly.
Betty felt guilty for breaking and entering and causing such a distress for Wlada, she hemmed her maidâs uniform for no cost.
Betty and Wlada were becoming friends.
Were being the operative word.
She wasnât in the apartment complex when it happened, nor was Jean-François. But after an exceptionally tedious day at work which consisted of angry, unsatisfied women and multiple needle punctures in Bettyâs fingersâshe wanted nothing more than to curl up and sleep. But when she returned, she saw everyone standing outside, police cars in the street and no sign of Wlada
Betty stood off to the side, a little further down from the apartments. She didnât want to be near it, she didnât want to see, she stood in the cold London air trembling. She heard running footsteps and looked up to see Jean-FranÄois racing towards her, and thatâs when she started to cry.
He halted to a stop in front of her. Uniform askew, hair shaken, panting harshly. âWhatâs happened? Betty, Ms. Stevenson whatââ He was cut off by her flinging herself into his arms. Sobbing harshly. He stood, unknowing what to do except hold her close.
âWlada was killed.â He heard her whisper.
He tightened his grip, both to comfort her and in anger, disgust, fear and shame.Â
Sitting in his office, the policemen, reporters, other tenants all finally leftâleaving Betty and Mercier alone with their sadness.
Both sipped their tea quietly, unsure of what to say until Mercier piped in.
âWord of advice, donât drink black tea after scotch. Rubbish taste.â
Betty looked up at him, slightly smiling. She set her cup down with trembling hands.
âI umâŚwant to apologize for before.â
He looked at her and furrowed his brows.
âFor erm, yâknowâŚCrying on you and all.â Betty looked down at her skirt, afraid to meet his eye.
She heard him get up and make his way over.
Oh God, she thought, this is where he tells me to leave or he leaves himself. You foolish girl youâ
His hand went under her chin and tilted upwards. His gaze was blank but his voice was soft. âNonsense.â
âB-but Iââ
He shushed her gently and knelt in front of her, eye level with her.
âMon ĂŠtoile, I think you needed a hug.â He chuckled once, âGod knows I did.â
Betty didnât say anything, just nodded once.
âIâm riddled with guilt.â He sighed looking down.
âWha? Why? Itâs not yourââ
âIt was because of my job, Betty. They were after me but they got her instead.â He shook his head, his curls to her face. Betty bravely put her hand atop his head and ran a circuit. She heard him him but he still bowed his head. âShe was killed by Germans who I was spying oââ His head snapped up. She pulled her hand back gasping.
âMerde.â He whispered and stood up so quickly, Betty felt dizzy.
âYou must forget you heard that.â He was by the window with his back to her again. Betty could see his shoulders shaking. âThe drink must have loosened my tongue, IâŚOh, please. For your safety, forget that Iââ
He was cut off by the feeling of Bettyâs arms around him yet again. Betty hid her face into his back, rubbing her cheek against the soft wool. Her hands rested gently on his chest and she felt his hands cover hers.
âSâalright. Consider it gone.â
Mercier sighed and relaxed against her. Betty tried her best to rock them side to side. He turned around her arms and when she tried to pull her hands back he stepped closer and wrapped her in a tight hug. He buried his face into her hair.
âThank you mon ĂŠtoile.â
She giggled, âWhat does that mean?â
He pulled back and tucked her hair behind her cheek. âMy star. I only ever see you at night, and when you smile,â he started and grinned as she blushed and looked down, âYour eyes get this sparkle in them. Like the ones in the sky.â
She looked up at him, âJean-François, I donât think this isâŚ.the right time toâŚâ
He nodded once and slightly loosened his grip. âI agree. I wonât take advantage of you during a time like this.â
âI was gonna say that about you.â
He smiled at her and she blushed.
He stepped away from her, presumably to choke down his cold black tea when Betty said,
âI couldâŚfill in for her while you find a new maid.â
He turned to her, âWhat?â
âIt sounds awful of me to say, and please donât think bad of me. Cos, while I know Iâll never be her I canâŚ.I can just clean for ya while youâŚâ She trailed off and gestured aimlessly with her hands.
âIâŚthatâs very kind.â
âItâs the least I can do.â
He grinned gently, âBut how about I see you not as a temporary maid.â
Her head started to spin, âI thought we said toââ
âAs a friend.â He declared, âI know you and Wlada were becoming close.â
âIâŚ.â She started to tremble.
âI noticed the extra tea cup she would be washing,â he said wistfully. He looked at her, âI think you and I both need friends. Why not together?â
She smiled, and blinked back tears. âYeah. Yeah, Iâd like thatâŚ.Wlada would too.â
He nodded again and picked up his teacup, âTo Wlada.â He saluted.
Betty picked up hers, mimicking his gesture, âTo Wlada.â She whispered.
Fanny always loved a good story. Having grown up in a loveless home, she rarely got told them. She always loved the idea of new adventures, new people and new experiences; good or bad, she loved to hear them all.
Her favorite time of the day was tea time with Giacomo. She had met him in London after he escaped from prison, one of her favorite stories from him. Before they used to exchange stories over tea across from one another at a table, now they could do so in the comfort of their shared home, in front of a warm fire and wrapped in one anotherâs arms. He, of course loved hearing her recounts of her life at Mansfield Park, no matter how grim. It meant he could kiss her tears away.
âTell me the story of how you met Rocco, Giac.â
âWhat was that dogâs name that you loved so dearly?â
âWhat about the time you healed a priest you sent into cardiac arrest?â
âWhat about that man Crawford, you mentioned how unsettled he made you?â
âThey chased you all through Venice?!â
âBlimey. Edmund really was a dunce wasnât he?â
âAnd Henriette was no angel, was she?â
He loved her enthusiasm. The way her eyes always gleamed when he told her of the many places he had been. He even loved when she winced at the gruesome parts of his stories, it meant he could hold her even tighter.
Though his tales always seemed to be light and adventurous, sometimes they went too far. Too dark.
Presently, Giac was awakened by frantic movements from Fanny. He peered his eyes opened and adjusted to the dark where he saw her form shaking and squirming. Her breath came out in gasping shudders and not the ones he was used to hearing in their shared moments of ecstasy. He gently placed a hand on her shoulder but it only made her flinch and cry with more volume. His chest clenched. He propped himself up and leaned over her.
âFanny? Fanny! Fanny, love wake up. Itâs just a bad dream. Fanny, Fanny!â
âGiacomo! Oh no, someone help him! Someone call a doctor! Help me stop the blood! Someone please, help me stop the blood!â Tears poured from her cheeks and she helplessly flailed her body around much to Giacâs horror. âGet off of me, get off of me please! Get off!â She cried. He had never seen her this upset and he was at a complete loss of what to do.
He shook her harder and whispered her name into her ear. âFanny, come back to me. Come here. Wake up.â
It finally worked as she shot up from the pillows with a strangled shout and quickly turned her head, asserting where she was.
âFanny? Fanny, look at me. Itâs Giacomo. And youâre in our home, and youâre safe.â
Her red-rimmed whisky eyes met his glazed and concerned blues as she choked on a sob and put her hand to her mouth.
âCome here,â he whispered and pulled her to him. âWhat was that about eh?â He cradled her head to his chest, rubbing his head down her golden curls and across her cheek, clearing away the tear stains.
âIâŚYouâŚHe, and theââ She hiccupped through more tears and he took her face in his hands.
âSlowly now. Please. Breathe deeply and tell me, Fanny. Whatâs the matter darling?â
She turned her head down, still in his palms and more tears came as she whispered, âHe shot you, Giacomo.â
Giacâs heart plummeted when he instantly what she dreamt about.
When he once again fought for Henrietteâs affections, her husband Grimani challenged him to a dual. Even after refusing to fire, Grimani still shot him in his hand. Tricked into crime and a fugitive yet again, Giacomo fled Italy for England where he met Fanny. By then, he was all healed, after a brutal recovery, and Fannyâs presence seemed to make the ache go away.
He was apprehensive to tell her of that, because he feared it would upset her. He hated to be proved right.
âFanny, IâŚIâm so sorry.â He pulled her against his chest and pressed a kiss to her hair. âI should have never told you that story.â
She shook her head against him and delicately wrapped her arms around his waist. âIâm sorry, Giacomo.â
âDonât be. Donât you dare.â He chuckled through the lump in his throat.
âI asked for the story,â She peered up at him, âI wanted to know. Iâm glad you told meâŚI want to know everything about you.â She pressed her cheek to his chest, specifically her ear to his heart and listened to the steady beat. âIâm sorry IâmâŚacting so distastefully emotive.â
âFanny, I donât blame you for being upset.â
âY-you donât?â
âNo. Not at all! Honestly if our roles were switched, Iâd be upset too.â
She merely sniffed and his heart broke more. He hated seeing her in pain, especially caused by him and furthermore pain that could have been avoided.
âFanny. My love, talk me through it. What did you dream of?â He maneuvered their bodies so they were resting against the headboard, her head against his shoulder and his arm around her waist.
âI was thereâŚWith you in that field you described. Rocco was there andâŚ.I saw you two. From a distance and heâŚI saw you go down andâŚit seemed to take forever to run to you. And..and when I did, you wouldnâtâŚ.ThereâŚThere was so much bloodâŚAnd I couldnât stop it.â
Giac closed his eyes in shame. âOh Fanny. Fanny Iâmââ
âPlease, donâtâŚ.Please. I donât want this to change anything.â
âWhat do you mean?â He furrowed his brow.Â
âI want you to keep telling me these things, Giacomo. Youâre myâŚ.I still want to know everything. All your stories, I love them. I really do.â
âOh, Fanny.â
âPlease donât think me weak for crying.â
âI would never! Come on now, you donât think Iâve had nightmares about the stories youâve told?â
Her eyes went wide and her face paled of color.
âWhat do you dream of?â
He paused for a moment looking down. She ran her hand reassuringly through his hair and waited for him to tell her what was wrong. âSometimes I dream that he got you. That youâre Crawfordâs wife. Sometimes I see you in tears, which enrages me of courseâŚBut sometimes I see you happy. Youâre laughing and smiling, but at himâŚIn those dreams it actually hurts to see you happy.â He laughed mirthlessly. âGod, that sounds awful of me doesnât it?â
âIt doesnât.â She choked out. And she hugged and squeezed him tightly, âI would never be happy with him. Never! Iâm sorry, so sorry. I want you Giacomo. I only love you!â
He held her against him and nuzzled his face into her hair, murmuring soothing sounds to help calm her.
âBlimey, weâre a right mess.â
She pulled back and laughed breathlessly. âWhat do we do, Giac?â
He pondered her for a moment, mindlessly stroking her cheek before he said, âWe make promises.â He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
âPromises?â
âI promise to continue telling you my stories, as long as you promise me to tell me when youâre upset. That way I can try and prevent your bad dreams.â
She beamed at him and how sweet he truly was, âYes. I promise. Same to you, please.â
He bent over and kissed her gently. He felt her take his left hand into both of hers and she pressed her lips to his scar. Again, and again, and again.
âPromise me you wonât get shot again.â
He laughed and clasped her head in his palms, âI promise.â He waited for a moment, âWhat did Grimani do, after heâ?â He hated making her relive it but he felt the need to know.
âHe tried to pull me away from you.â She shuddered.
Giac frowned, remembering her yell âGet off of meâ. He shook his head with a grin and kissed her cheek and neck. âDonât worry. Iâd sooner get shot again before Iâd let him lay a hand on you.â He kissed below her ear, âOr any man for that matter.â
She smiled gently, âYou mustnât say such things.â
âMustnât I?â He lightly tickled her sides and felt his heart swell upon hearing her laughter. He stroked her hair, âDo you feel better now?â
She smiled, âA little.â
âWant to go back to sleep?â
âNo, but I would still like to stay in bed.â She giggled and kissed him passionately and he smiled into her lips and rolled on top of her. All unbidden images of blood soaked clothes and happy smiles at other men were soon forgotten.Â
Afterward, they laid cuddled together in utter warmth, safety, and love. Fanny asked to hold him that night and he complied with a shy smile, resting on his side and feeling her fit into him. She was still slightly afraid to sleep, and she would talk about it with him in the morning. However in that moment, she was perfectly content holding her Giac. Gently running her free hand which wasnât clasped together with his and resting under his cheek, down his hair. She pressed her lips to the back of his neck, pecking his skin softly as she matched her breathing with his. Holding onto him for dear life and serenity.
