HMS Prince of Wales (R09) by Tony Via Flickr: The Carrier berthed at the Cruise Liner Terminal on the city waterfront, Liverpool. After four hours on a photo walk in Liverpool, it was lovely to get onto the Mersey Ferry and see the carrier up close. The Prince of Wales was Launched on 21st December 2019, a winter solstice baby. Assembly began on 9 September 2014, during this time it was debated if the Prince of Wales would be mothballed after construction as only one of the two carriers commissioned (Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales), would be needed. It was actually cheaper to build the carrier than to cancel the contract. Prince of Wales was formally named on 8 September 2017 at Rosyth dockyard by The Duchess of Rothesay, the wife of the current Prince of Wales. The previous war ship of the same name, HMS Prince of Wales was a King George V-class battleship of the Royal Navy, built at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead, on the opposite bank of the river Mersey.
