This morning, after I dropped my kids off at preschool, President Trump was on television. Dressed for work, my husband was seated on our couch, watching for a few moments before leaving for his office. President Trump—the words LIVE in white. With my coat still on, clutching a going-cold mug of coffee, I sat down to listen. “He’s actually not a bad speaker,” David says, next to me. “He has good delivery. I’m sure he’s reading from a teleprompter, but you can’t tell.” I look at Trump’s half-closed eyes. Listen to his breath sucking in through his mouth and nose. “World Economic Forum” is repeatedly printed across a blue backdrop. He stands and breaths and speaks at a podium in Davos, Switzerland. It is afternoon there. Here it is just after eight o'clock. A few miles across town, my three children are settling into circles on school carpets. Trump speaks about immigration. He says he believes that America must replace its current policy, which favors extended-family immigration, with a merit-based system. He wants to vet the best, the brightest—particularly those individuals who will favorably contribute to the economy. I suddenly picture the United States as a tremendous sorority, the large white-columned manor.

What is the measure of a man?

Who is a worthy?

Who is a valuable?

One approach, yes, is to consider the person’s level of education, their field of employment, how their occupation and potential or collected wealth might benefit America—our money, our knowledge. Innovation. Growth—measured by—the stock market? GNP?

This is one kind of value.

YES, I hear the BIG VOICE say, we have to have some way to sort people. We have to have some way to choose. If we are going to choose, why not choose THE BEST.

The best. The best and the brightest. Alpha Alpha Alpha.

They would take us to THAT FUTURE.

But I believe another kind of future would also be something fine.
