From the classic era of Doctor Who comes one of the most enduring characters in that universe besides The Doctor themselves, on their own: Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. It’s the late 1960s and the Brig hopes for a nice vacation in New York City with his fiancée and teenaged pseudo-nephew. It doesn’t take long before he’s knee-deep in fetid subway tunnel sewage armed with a broken furniture leg trying to foil an old enemy from hatching a devious scheme. We get a scrum breaking out at a Vietnam war protest outside a famous hotel in Manhattan. Someone takes shelter in a phone booth — not the time-travelling kind. Fire trucks. The period, texture and motion of the city flow just right, then into what every New Yorker really wants in speculative-fic taking place in the city: Psychotic possessed rats.
