THE BETHS "Straight Line Was a Lie" on World Cafe Live
The Beths has always been a band with rules. You know, no synthesizers, no tempos below X [...] everyone sings and plays at the same time. This structure has always been part of what we do [...] The structure facilitates the creative side.
FAIRWEATHERMYTH + A(s)OTY 2025 The Beths - Straight Line Was a Lie
New Zealand indie-rockers, THE BETHS, are back with their fourth album Straight Line Was A Lie. For the quartet, the record can be summarised as a representation of life where nothing is straightforward, and everything happens in its own mysterious way. It’s as equally terrifying as it is beautiful but, in the words of frontwoman Elizabeth Stokes, “Linear progression is an illusion. What life really is is maintenance and finding meaning in that maintenance.” And, frankly, the album serves as a sweet reminder that we are all human beings going through our own stories at different paces, so there’s no point in comparing yourself to others.

It’s mostly about Oakley Creek, which during the [2023] Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods got wiped out. It’s a very beloved space. It’s now 2025, and it still hasn’t recovered. There are no paths anymore; it’s kind of grown wild a bit and changed a lot. To some extent, it feels like a lot of life is just being eroded, but nature continues on in a way that’s comforting. You can say Oakley Creek got destroyed, but it didn’t. It’s still there—it’s just different. — via Apple Music

The Beths Mother, Pray For Me (2025) dir. Annabel Kean & Callum Devlin

'Cause I'm late again to realizing. The spiral turns so steadily down, there's no getting out.
