The work depicts the Biblical account referred to as "The Annunciation", where the Arch-Angel Gabriel appears to the young virgin Mary. The work is one of exceptional quality in every respect and authentic to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood principles of abundant detail and intense colours. Dating to circa 1890-1910, the painting can be placed within the circle of Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), William Morris (1834-1896) and John William Waterhouse (1849-1917). There are elements within the painting of being unfinished - ie: sketchy in places, which might account for its artist not yet being identified.
