Tonight at book club, (re-reading The Alchemist with my students) the following passage really stood out for me, "When someone sees the same people every day, as had happened with him [Santiago] at the Seminary, they wind up becoming a part of the persons life. And then they want the person to change. If someone isn't what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own." I feel that it's on the surface level that we begin to build our own expectations of others, and it isn't until we pull back layers and enter into a sphere of intimacy that we realize that our surface observations are sometimes nothing more than projections. It is possible that we sometimes want so badly to see the goodness in ourselves manifested in those around us. Truth is, our light cant shine in others or it would no longer be our light. Those around us however, may be burning bright in areas in which we ourselves have gone dim. Your light cannot be shielded; it is meant to shine brightly for others to bask in your warmth. "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:16
