Domenico della Rafaelle from The Silver Devil. One of my favourite H in a hr simply because of how awful he is and how much he revels in his awfulness. Probably the most 'problematic, irredeemable' hero I've ever read about. Kidnapping our heroine, threatening to kidnap cardinals, rebelling against pope, bullying the archbishop. His shenanigans are just extraordinary. His list of enemies include his uncle, half brother, stepmother no. 2 who is also his illegitimate brother's mistress, stepmother no. 1's brother, his former lover/ best friend Piero, the archbishop etc. Truly, the family dynamic of all time. And he doesn't become a good person in the end. He just becomes domesticated.
This will last until the day roses on my grave stop sharing roots with the roses on yours,”

Readers who clutch their pearls at Sebastian St. Vincent kidnapping Lillian or Westcliff seducing her would literally keel over when they read The Silver Devil by Teresa Denys because the hero is truly reprehensible. And he doesn't get redeemed in the end. He just gets tamed by the heroine. It's so fun.

1. My writing highlight for the year:
That one's easy - after not writing much for 4 years, I found my inspiration and mojo again and started writing ME:A fic again. I had lots of reasons to take a step back from fandom and reset, I just didn't know it would take so long to find myself again. Getting inspired to write, making contact with my fandom friends, and enjoying being creative has been wonderful! So my highlight is just being excited about writing again!
5. My favourite book I read this year
The Silver Devil by Teresa Denys. I stumbled upon this in a second-hand bookshop for 50c and didn't realise what a rare book it was. It's a 70s bodice ripper, and oh my gosh ... it's hard to explain just how good this book is. The Hero is awful - genuinely unapologetic, unlikeable, and he's willing to do anything to get what he wants: murder, torture, rape. And yet, he's one of the most well written characters I've come across, and he's obviously bisexual which isn't made fun of or used to paint him as "less masculine". The heroine is thrust into a dreadful situation, and yet ... she falls for this horrible man who she genuinely can't live without because he protects her from worse things. The plot does not romanticise their relationship, and he isn't painted as a good guy or someone who will try to change. He's a bastard and she knows it, but by the end of the story she loves him anyway and realises that in his own twisted way, he can't live without her either.
It's a very difficult book to track down, but you can get a pdf version online which i recommend. It's a book full of triggers - sexual violence, rape, torture, murder - but it's a genuinely incredible story.
I read 5 book in 3 days last week. 1 was a book I found on wattpad and honestly I skimmed the last quarter. So I will not recommend that one.
The rest were bodice rippers from the 70-early 90s. I am in a romance novel kick so just bear with me as this blog starts to reflect that. lol. Or don’t that’s your choice.
My favorite one that I read last week was The Silver Devil by Teresa Denys. It is not a typical romance. It is set in Renaissance Italy. And all though it had more political intrigue than I typically care for I could not put it down simply for the eloquence and vivid descriptions. It is gorgeous. It is also very problematic by today's standards but I grew up sneaking my mom’s romance novels so most of that doesn’t bother me.
You can find free PDFs on the interwebs. And it is worth it just to get your literary juices flowing. I read it and felt inspired to write.
