The Knights win against the Shadows has to be so fucking confusing from Pregrina's pov.
First you bully Odward's brother who you know is scared of ghosts. The next day their keeper keeps blocking goals. Then you bench one of your players and finally get a goal before halftime. Then after halftime the Knights keep trying to hit your diadem (how the fuck do they know about that?). As payback you bench the rest of your team and have the ghosts do the work.
Then Odward's Jelly Brother blocks one of the ghosts and it goes flying backwards???
You summon ghost tempest and the knights keep going.
Then they FUCKING combine tamas??? Ref? Is that like allowed???
So after they manage to score and you lose the diadem your team has to sub Freki in.
Seconds later he body slams Odward and gets a penalty.
Then the new kid Ragno threw of the Eyrie does the penalty kick.... and fucking score.
Pregrinaβs name is long and hard to say so I now headcanon that the shadows call her Perry, not to her face though because she hates it.
Dragon Striker - The Captains
We only saw Sayelle become the captain of her team. It got me wondering how other captains were chosen. It is probably up to Goyens, but how do they determine that?
In the series, most of the captains are older.
Lilas, Casper, and Callista are fourth-year students and serve as captains.
We can assume they were captains in their third year as well.
However, it's possible that there were other fourth-year students who had been captains before them, and as a reward for getting into the All Stars team, they were allowed to become captains when the previous captains graduated.
It seems that the most important requirement for becoming a captain is the immense power of your Tama.
This may be the reason for the deterioration in Casper and Odward's relationship. On the All-Stars team, it seemed Odward was the captain. Odward has some resentment about not being made captain, and Casper's ego skyrocketed when he became captain. The reason they (team? Surya?) chose Casper and Calista over Odward is because their magnetic Tama is much more powerful, i.e. destructive, than Odward's illusions, which don't actually harm other players.
At least other captains like Ragno, Lilas, and Pregrina lead their teams and make some important decisions. Casper and Callista don't do anything to lead their team besides being good players individually and as a duo. Being a good player doesn't make you a good captain.
I still wonder what having multiple captains entails. If one captain doesn't do their job, the other steps in? If you can have multiple captains, why not make Odward your honorary third captain, or whatever, fuck it!
Let's leave it to the Bards to turn the captaincy into a popularity contest.
Ragno was captain in his third year. Interestingly, there were no fourth-year players on their team. The reason is that the creators probably didn't want to create a character just for this one game that they would have to write out of the plot. The implication is that the Dragons are very picky when choosing their new members. I wouldn't be surprised if in some years they didn't add anyone to the team because none of the candidates were good enough for them.
Before Ssyelle, the youngest captain was Pregrina, who likely took over the title from some poor fourth-year in her first year after receiving the diadem. I bet they weren't happy about it. She has a powerful Tama, but at least that makes sense, since she's the one giving the orders. If she weren't, the captain would have to order her to possess someone. We're cutting out the middleman.
Personally, I find it weird that they kicked Pregrin out because she failed to score a win once. It is suggested that Pregrina had a nervous breakdown, likely deciding she was useless without the diadem, and left the team on her own. It also seems that the Diadem is broken, so it can no longer help her. She'll likely have an arc where she learns to use the Tama without the Diadem and reconciles with her team, but in the meantime, Conan becomes the new Captain.
But why Conan? His Tama doesn't seem to be powerful and flashy from the description on the card. He didn't even play in the first match with the Knights.
Well, the meta reason is that they want to save him and reveal his power later. But in-universe, it seems his power is more useful off the field for planning and strategizing. Other players are too young and inexperienced. Conan may not look it, but he's a 3rd year. That seems to be a prime year to become a captain. There's Freki, who's older, but he doesn't seem to have a strategic mind of his own, being more of the muscle of the group. There is also a possibility that when he turns into a werewolf, he loses some of his ability to think logically and is unable to speak, only making animal-like sounds. Not good for the captain calling the shots. Cleo is also in her third year, but she hasn't shown anything to indicate she would be a good captain. So, by process of elimination, since no one else had a particularly powerful Tama or strategic mind, Sanga decided on Conan as the new captain. I guess Sanag will give up on changing captains every time Shadows lose or Conan somehow leads his team to victories, or at least draws.
Good luck, Conan! I believe in you!
Those promos clearly are made to show the titular teams/characters as cool and badass, so that's why they don't flatter the Shadows. They will look better in their own promos.
