the thing that really makes me insane about the mixtape scene is the arwen and aragorn reference (“it was a gift. keep it.” at 4:40 here). because that’s not just a reference the writers are making it’s a parallel dean himself is drawing.
like okay! hey dean, how much time do you spend thinking about star crossed lovers kept apart by duty and the mission? about the guy you’re in love with trying to sneak out on dangerous quests without saying goodbye? about immortal otherworldly beings made mortal by their love for a human? about those immortals choosing to stay on earth because of that love, even when the rest of their kind returns to heaven the blessed realm? about the love of your life visiting you in your dreams? a normal amount, yeah that’s what I thought.
the craziest thing about the mixtape is it sets up a precedent, we had no idea dean gave it to him because it didn't happen onscreen, we only knew about it because we saw castiel trying to return it.
so how many other gifts may dean have given castiel that he just kept?? whose gifting or returning wasn't crucial to the main plot and so we didn't get to see??
how many destiel scenes happened offscreen during all those years?? another example of this is them watching tombstone. so many little throwaway lines or moments here and there that basically confirm that for as much insane couple behavior we saw onscreen, there was a whole other level of offscreen insanity going on

on the surface, the destiel mixtape is already crazy — the music dean’s parents fell in love over, the michaelangelo of it all, the inherent vulnerability and tenderness of making someone a physical compilation of the songs you hold most dear, we’ve all talked about this.
but you peel back the layers and it just gets crazier. “it’s a gift, you keep those” is a lord of the rings reference (paralleling dean and cas with aragorn and arwen is like. next level insane) AND we know that one of dean’s favorite songs is ramble on which references lord of the rings in its lyrics and it’s just like. this tiny little scene is packed so full of meaning and it’s SO deeply and undeniably romantic. i’m eating glass
personality test: people who genuinely believe cas was so naive had no idea the cassette was a "gift, you keep those" and was actually returning it VS people who understand cas was using the cassette strategically, as part of his scheme to "play dean" and get the colt from his room.
