Falling Star

I fell in love the way cities fall Quietly at first With paperwork and keys changing hands With streets renamed while no one was Watching

It did not feel light It felt like depth Like standing on the edge of a well And realizing the echo knows your name

You arrived without asking And something in me stepped aside As if it had been waiting To be displaced

Love was not tenderness It was surveillance The constant awareness Of another pulse moving inside my own decisions I began to edit my thoughts Before I even finished thinking them

There was fear in it Not of losing you But of keeping you Of waking one day To find my inner rooms rearranged Familiar doors now opening into unfamiliar dark

I mistook the weight for safety I mistook the closeness for truth Your presence became a gravity That bent my days toward you Until even my solitude Orbited your absence
